Hi all

I've just fitted a HID kit to my R100GSPD that replaces the existing H4 50/55W bulb with a HID conversion unit that does both high and low beam. It works rather well.

Sorry if everyone knows about these already, I mention it just in case as it was news to me.

Most kits seem to have either high OR low beams but not both.

Result: brighter light, less drain on the battery and longer bulb life

Sorry about the absence of pictures, new to this. If there's any interest I'll try to take some and include them.

Any interest or is this all old hat?

HID Unit

Pictures would have been nice Nick but failing that, tell us more about your conversion - where did you get the HID unit, how much, where did you locate the relay and igniter/ballast, were there any particular problems, does this mean you have only one headlight bulb covering noth main and dipped or only have dipped beam now etc etc???

Ray
PS I am interested as I have an R100GS unmodified and an R1150GSA to which I fitted a Nippy Norman HID dipeed beam unit.

Ray, hi

The kit came from the States and provides HID light on main and dipped beam with no delay or blackout when switching between the two.

Most conversions I have seen and heard about end up as a compromise, ie. HID dipped OR main, with a blue coloured halogen providing the other beam if you're lucky. That's a crap idea if ever there was

The ballast/igniter and relay I have fitted next to the headlamp bowl in the 'cockpit fairing' you get on a PD, power comes from the battery via a fused cable I ran under the tank. The old headlamp connector is used to provide the switching signal to change between HID high beam and HID low beam so none of the original wiring is touched. great if you want to put things back to original at a later date.

I just fitted the kit, making it up as I went along. It's really not rocket science and is really a matter of owners preference to fit it how they want.

It seems a shame that a newbie to this site like myself, gets slagged off twice for posting something without pictures. Hardly encouragement to share ideas and info even if what I have got to say turns out to be old hat

So thank you Ray for your polite enquiry. If you need any other info just PM me

Nick I don't think that you were being slagged off, folk just want to see some pics...I've been following this thread, but didn't post onto it as it seemed pointless for lots of people to ask the same things...so please, don't take it the wrong way and share your ideas / mods with us... :thumb

That's not to say you won't get slagged off as there's always someone ready with a quip... It's all part of being on the site I'm afraid... :eek

HID Kit From the States

Hi Nick

This sounds really interesting to me (for my own R100GS) and I wonder if you can give any more details of the USA supplier - web site, phone number or whatever. I am pretty sure that there would be quite a few others in the Airheads section who might also be interested in this HID product.

Like Nadeem says, dont take offence from the welcome you received!
