High idle speed and I only charged the battery...

Hello

I had to recharge my 1150GS battery last night as I'd stupidly left the keys in and turned on for a few hours whilst it was sat in the garage. Now, not being technically minded, this simple task still proved to be a challenge but when I rode into work this morning, the idle speed was about 2700. Normally its about 1500.

Could I have moved/pushed/squashed anything when I put the fuel tank back in place, which would affect the idle speed? Obviously I will have a look when I return home but any advice or thoughts appreciated. The bike seems to be running hotter this morning and it wasn't much fun sitting at all the traffic lights with the bike sounding like the choke was fully on. Thanks
 
Turn the ignition on but don't start, open and close the throttle twice, turn the ignition off.

This resets the brain.

Should be OK

You probably caught the throttle cable and it han't reseated properly. Scroll down this thread and you'll see the pictures that will explain everything. :)

Only if you have pulled fuse 5 first, also check that the throttle cables are seated correctely.

Forgive my ignorance - what does "Only if you've pulled fuse 5 first" mean? Does it mean - before turning on ignition, opening closing throttle etc, - remove fuse 5 and put it back again?

I didn't actually disconnect the battery to charge it up - just connected an Optimiser. The choke lever also felt different on my ride into work, as if it was half on but couldn't be pushed down any more.

Exactly. Remove fuse 5, wait 30 seconds, replace.

Did you lift the tank up? If so, then you probably dislodged the throttle cable, as shown in the pics. I would give good odds that 90% of GS riders have at one point in time or another. Did the bike run roughly, and only really sweet on full throttle? That's usually a dead giveaway. Check the throttle cable is the best, easiest and most likely place to start.

I've been led to believe that removing Fuse 5 isolates tha Motronic Unit from the battery. It needs to remain connected to 'remember'. Disconnecting the battery will have the same effect as pulling Fuse 5, and will 'zero' its memory (but will also zero the clock etc).
The manual assumes that the battery is already disconnected and so doesn't need to mention the fuse. I think.

Bateman, you do realise that you can recharge the battery via your plug sockets. I'm sure its a lot easier than removing the tank etc especially, if like me you are not mechanically minded. :P

You need one of these and then you just plug in your ciggie lighter thingy (tech term).:) Any bike shop should have one, or be able to get you one in.:)

Optimiser type - £9.95 or therabouts from H. Gericke....bought one last week...remove the red cap for use on the bike, and if you want to use it to "boost" a car battery, put the red bit back on..doddle!!
