I think that's only an appearance - partly there was a spate of problems with early production bikes. But also the 1200 owners seem to be more vocal about reporting problems, and every report gets gloated over by some owners of older bikes who don't want to admit the 1200 is a "real GS". There's definitely some forum politics involved here.

Amen.......:)

Just got of the phone with the dealer selling the GS it now has nearly 20k on it. That's some riding in 9 months.

Do you think the extra couple of thousands miles should reduce the price.?

Also it's a blue bike and they have offered to change the plastic( I like yellow), should I or am I just being a tart!!!!!

Re: High mileage

Hi Cejsmith

I don't ride a GS but when i looked at changing my bike for a 1150Gs the local dealer just laughed when i told him the mileage on my own bike a 1150RS then it had about 28000 miles and it's an 01 model (admittedly about 18000 of those were put on in the short period i've owned it) it would appear anything over 4000 per year is out of the ordinary (this figure was quoted as the average annual bike mileage)I didn't get a price in the end as i knew they weren't that keen to deal so i believe HIGH mileage does affect prices. I know there are those who will say the RS is not a popular bike and the GS is the ultimate and i'm not arguing otherwise, the high cost of second hand ones reflect that.

I concur, the same thing happened in The Pipe and Slippers years ago, when I was a lad, and the early GS'ers were more or less ostracised for being perceived by some older members as Hooligans and Heretics. :D

I'd second what Klinger said. You will get a different story from the dealer when you are buying a high mileage bike to the one that you will get when you are selling one. In truth, 4000 miles per year is trivial for any big bike let alone a BMW. But the price guide dealers use knocks money off for mileage over (I believe 2k per year) and this becomes a self fulfilling prophecy when it comes to part ex's..

So the question you have to ask yourself is whether you are going to keep the bike for a long time and do high mileage, or whether its going to be a weekend toy. If the latter, then get a low mileage bike. If the former, then it doesnt really matter either way.

But 20k on a year old bike with full serice history should be no problem in terms of wear. I would be inclined to carefully check the physical condition (ie frame, wheels etc) since that sort of mileage implies some sort of commercial use. Check for drops, accident repairs etc.

You're always going to get screwed at trade in time for mileage...anything over the 4k/annum average and there'll be an intake of breath.

As for high mileage on the 12GS - I have 13k on mine and there would appear to be very little wear and tear with the exception of certain areas of corrosion i.e. front plate of engine + finish on the wheels. The suspension / engine is spot-bollock-on. I put 13k on my last sportsbike and the 'shine' had definately worn off that.

20K a year doesn't have to mean commercial use (however it's a distinct possibility).

If you use your bike for every day commuting - and fun riding, 20K isn't out of the question.

If you do two or three, 7 day trips on your bike, you'll easily aquire 5K there alone. Which means you only have to commute some odd 30 - 35 miles one way per working day. And that's not not counting doing "silly things" like all day rides during the w/e (easily 150 - 300 miles per rideout) or doing the National Rally (540+ miles in 20h)

:D

Just want all you less than 4k per year riders to go out there and use your bikes. :D

Well

I brought it 19K on the clock,

paid £8500 for it , but they are putting on a full remus TI system and changing the colour from blue to yellow. Also it has full BMW luggage.

So i'm happy as it has 13 months warranty left and hopefully by now all the problems should have been sorted.
