Hi to all,

Just wondered who’s got the most miles on the 1200 on this forum and how it’s going etc? Is it like the 1150, better with miles?

Safe riding,

TD

10,600

Mine has done 10,600 now. I have done 4000 on it since 12th July. Even in the short time I have owned it I have noticed i'm using less oil.
Fitted LED rear light and indicators from Nippy Norman, working perfect. Also bar risers which has increased comfort. New low seat I bought(which has done 4000) is definitely getting more comfy.
Givi top box and OE panniers binned in favor of metal mules and rollbag to distribute weight better two up. H&B crash bars fitted, TT steering stop and it came with Carbon fibre NIppy Norman hugger (superb) and blue headlights. fastway footpegs now fitted (brilliant). Tobinators.
Headlight protector fitted a perspex one, which reflects light back.
The more I ride it the more I love it..............best all round bike i've ever owned. Only the little demons 80G/S comes close on grin factor :D

The more I ride it the more I love it.

12,500 since late October; run-in precisely "by the book" including warmups and only riding twisty roads so that the engine would get a nice varied range of revs and load.

Small amount of corrosion on engine front-plate sorted under warranty, and other than that the bike has been fine.

Massive improvement at the 6000 mile service when remapping (etc) raised the fuel economy so that tank-range is now at the 240-ish mark.

Adaptations: RAM-mount GPS, FastWay footpegs, Wunderlich centre-stand handle, NippyNorman tall screen, Baglux.

Superb, and I still get people running-up to ask me about it.

17k on the clock and all going well. Overall the bike seems better than at low mileage. The gearbox is much more slick. Usual problems i.e. corrosion on front of engine, paint on wheels failed, new fuel pump, secondary spark plug became loose, nothing unusual for a 12. Been very reliable of late (touches something woody).

18K and about to get yet another front engine cover under warranty due to corrosion again. Apart from that, totally brilliant.

Wow, I was thinking I had done well at 7700 miles since March but I am clearly an amateur. If these were Jap sports bikes they'd be worth £3.50 and a packet of pork scratchings by now!!!! :bow :bow :bow :bow :bow

Got 3500 on mine and quite frankly it's been the most unreliable bag of shite I've ever had the misfortune to own, its had 2 new rear hubs and the third is on it's way out again, both of the lower spark plugs failed when the ceramic core started leaking exhaust gases around them and finally today it wouldn't start as its flattened the battery aftre being parked up for less than a week when I've been at work.
To ride it is fantastic but I can't honestly see me still having it that much longer.

Think my mileage tally will slow a little now, but I'm happy I'm getting my money's worth so far..

I forecast 14k by New Year and 17k within 12 months - all recretional.

7,000 miles in 7 months.

Despite two bloody frustrating recoveries in May & June, everything is fine and it gets better.

I'm glad you guys talked me out of selling it a few months back!

:clap

So how do you explain this kind of difference in reported reliability. Not just for the 12 but for 1150's and maybe all bikes ?
Is it:
1. Poor quality control and materials at the factory; some bikes ARE built worse.
2. Some people thrash their bike, do clutchless changes, go off road etc, and others don't.
or 3. Differences in reporting. Some people expect parts failures and don't mention them in posts like this, whereas others do.
What gives ? Would I be better off getting a Honda ?

Every product in the world has failures at some time. My guess is that it is a bit of luck and perhaps some bad parts used during assembly.

Cheers,

I have 29,000 miles, and will have 31,000 by the time I get home (posting this from a friend's laptop). I'm currently near Denver, CO, USA, helping out with this year's Iron Butt Rally. Speaking of which, there are 4 R1200GS'es competing this year. The highest mileage one is that of Vikki Johnson, at 54,000 miles.

Still going strong - at 55,300km

Just back home in Oz after nearly 3 months in Canada, Alaska, Arctic Circle, n/w USA.

A few small problems: Top-box fell off twice going over frost heaves on pavement near Arctic Circle; rear mudguard (fender) broke off on the Denali (rocky gravel) Hwy. Frequently don't have brakes, due to two intermittent faults, (per diag computer in Denver) which can be a bit scary at times. (all of the above will be fixed/replaced under warranty)

Otherwise, it ran beautifully. Only used 500ml of oil for the trip - 22,000km.

TKC80 front tyre has now got over 31,000km on it, with still more to come! Reversed direction at 14,900km. Kept it at 39psi at all times, even on all the dirt/gravel/rocky roads we did.

What a wonderful bike it is!! Love it!! Can't wait for it to arrive back here in Oz, early October-ish. :clap :clap
