Whats High miles for a GS?? and should it worry me when looking to buy??

How long is a piece of string? :)

General opinion is that anything under 20k is only just run in. Mine's got 27k on it now and is looking a bit shabby, but that's cos I treat it rough. The engines are certainly good for high mileage, but you might want to check the clutch and gearbox before buying. Some people have had clutches wear out early, most have been ok.

Generally the condition of the bike will reflect how it's been cared for.

Two sides to this coin. If you mean from the point of view of reliability, then I wouldnt worry about 15k per year. But if you mean from the point of view of price and resale, then the ridiculous 3k per year applies just as much to BMs as to other makes. Silly but there are so many weekend warriors doing 2 or 3 k per year that a bike that has been used properly is discounted.

Got 20k on my bike and can honestly say it still feels as good as when I picked it up......the same didn't apply to my previous jap bikes.

Resale value is the obvious problem, although if you get it cheap you sell it cheap you'll have less depreciation than the guy that buys new.

apparently 4k a year is the guide mileage for the gs1200 but the dealers don't seem to concerned about it...

20k on mine now and nearly 2 years old. The engine is nice & smooth, more poweful than when new. It's in great condition and comes up lovely when I take time to clean it.

I've had a few bits replaced under warranty (little things like the gearbox, rear frame, wheels :D), all with no quibbles from Vines, and it's been running extremely well since the last claim last June. Hopefully all the bits that will break have done so. Us early adopters pay the price for you slackers.

Other than resale value I'd go for the highest mileage I can find. (In fact that's exactly what I did.) I've seen a few 05 bikes with 3k miles for sale - you've got to ask yourself why did the last owner sell it so soon?

A one-owner bike with 20k on the clock at least you know he didnt get so frustrated he just wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible.

83,000 miles in three years on my '99 1150GS :D
60,000 miles on my 1150 Adventure in two years :D

No problems, both running better when sold than when new, didn't burn any oil. Look at the general condition, not the mileage. :clap

Can't see the 1200 being any different...

I tip my hat to you sir. :bow That explains the low post count.
At least some UKGSer's are riding more than they are posting. PB

Many thanks PB... didn't mention the 37,000m on my REAL 'bike.. the F650GS-Dakar, not two years old yet, overlapping with those done on the Adventure :beerjug:

Interesting comment about the oil - the 1150 is not supposed to be any better than the 1200 at using oil. Did yours never use oil or did the consumption slowly decline?

Don't know what you mean PB... :D

Both bikes used oil initially... consumption slowly decreasing as the miles gathered (20,000 to 30,000), until zilch used. Interesting, my first four valve boxer, a 1993 R1100RS was the same, but at about 8,000 miles I started to use Mobil One synthetic... then took to 50,000 miles before 'run in' and no oil used... still going strong!

Also interesting... The 650 Dakar at 37,000 hasn't used a drop of oil, and the lovers 650GS at 74,000 still doesn't use any. :beerjug:

Virtually no oil use on my 20k mile R1200GS now. It was fairly "usual" to begin with and gradually lessened. Brisk and fairly agressive running in helps I think.

My 12GS has just turned 20k and the oil consumption has decreased considerably over the last few miles.....like somebody has just turned the tap off.

I'll keep mine a little longer then :bounce1
I bought a gallon can instead of 1 Ltr bottle.

I use my 1200 mainly in town chasing trainees at 15 mph  , I've put in about 3 1/2 ltrs in less than 7000mls :( I'm not used to this. (well except for a knackered Kawasaki 750 gt that used a gallon every 1000 mls)
allways had Jap 4s ho and a Triumph till I got the Beemer.

Gonna have to get it out and do some real riding this year.

It helps if you use a heavier oil, mine burnt loads while I was using 10W/40 but after 24,000 miles I switched to 15W/50 and it hasn't used a drop. The engine sounds sweeter too :)
