Am I correct in thinking that there is a yet to be resolved issue with quite high battery drain on mobile phones resulting from MRA’s use of the HERE mapping. There has been a lot of comment on the MRA forum regarding this and I believe that MRA are working hard to resolve the matter. I guess this will necessitate the phone being on charge whilst it is being used with NEXT

I’m a lifetime MRA Gold member and love it for route planning but as yet I’m still using an XT for navigation although very tempted by a Carpuride or similar

I have started you a fresh thread.

Whilst power hungry, the app id certainly better than it was.

That said, I have used it (powered) on two motorbikes and in the car, all day, running reasonably complicated routes, without a problem. This is on an iPhone and on a Samsung android phone.

Other than for relatively short journeys, I would not rely on the phone’s battery alone. There again, I wouldn’t for any app; why not use the vehicle’s abundance of surplus power, if it’s easily available or, at worse, a power brick thing.

Used MRA app on my iPhone 15 Pro Max in conjunction with CHIGEE AIO-5 using Apple CarPlay on our recent 10 day jaunt to Eurobonds. Some days I find not charge my phone overnight. But had it plugged in the following day* in my Givi tank bag, which has Givi USB hub witching, taking power through a quick release cable from the bike’ battery.
Whilst charging, the phone would get hot, but I do expect for this to happen, as bag is:
  • A. Black (in direct sun)
  • B. Has all other manner of stuff in it, such as:
    • spare neck tube
    • bike and personal documents,
    • wallet
    • sun glasses
    • visor/helmet cleaning stuff
    • tank bag waterproof cover to name but a few.
So as a result, there is little room for any air to circulate.

The phones power would not drain, once up to a full charge and being plugged in. So I would say the power drain is minimal whilst MRA is in use, seeing as phone is at a 100% charge capacity. Perhaps this being aided by information being mirrored to CHIGEE display, thus preventing excess power drain versus using the actual phone as a navigation device and to display the route at same time.

*and each and every day regardless of current battery charge status for the duration of the distance traveled that day.

Hey guys,

I did a test with the latest MRA app and Android Auto on a Chigee at the weekend, and I had big problems with power drain and heat : https://forum.myrouteapp.com/topic/7666/overheating-phone-is-a-deal-breaker

If those of you that have had better experiences can help I'd really appreciate it.

I assume you are the ‘Tim Watson’ of the MyRoute forum piece? There’s a lot going on in that link.

For what it’s worth, I ran a bike powered iPhone 15 on a Peak Design mount, in temperatures over 30 C, for several days, displaying, navigating and giving voice instructions via Bluetooth along complex routes all without a problem.

My separate iPhone 15 in my tank bag, overheated several times, running nothing. I am not sure quite how much air you expect to circulate through a tank bag with open zips? Possibly a good place to start is to get over your fear that something is going to happen to your phone, when you are out on your bike. If you worry about it that much, buy a cheap sacrificial phone, with no SIM card and simply run MyRoute on it.

I use two phones, not because I think someone will steal it off my bike as I ride along or that I’ll necessarily crash. It is much simpler than that. Having once (and only once) dropped a phone, smashing its screen, rendering it useless, I didn’t want to maybe be away and do the same thing again. Not only would I lose my navigation, I’d lose every other 21st century app connected to the phone. How did I drop it the once? Fiddling around, putting it into BMW’s ill designed Connected Navigator cradle. Thankfully, I was at home, not hooning around France in the sun.

Try doing the same. If it works, great. If it doesn’t, then bin the lot, sell the Chigee and go back to a conventional GPS device….. or a map.
