High Screen, Low Screen or No Screen?

On the way back the heavens opened and it was some of the heaviest rain I have ever ridden through. The rain really hit my helmet hard but I think that the only screen that would have saved me from a soaking is called a car!

Hi Nemo

Go on, listen to the dark side :D

... I suppose the rain washed all the squashed flies off the visor!

What I find amazing is the helmet manufacturers design fantastic lids that work brilliantly in the wind tunnel in "clean" air but most bikes seem to have fairings that turbulate the air.:pullface

MRA Vario

Nikos, Nemo,

I'm 6' 1", Arai Tour X and have just fitted Vario. As I like to get the boring (i.e. Motorway) bits out of the way, I'm susceptible to 'trans-light' speeds on motorways; Vario works for me regardless of speed. Wind doesn't disappear, but is reduced to air movement rather than buffeting. Works for me. :)

Far too many variables including helmet type / make / persons height etc etc.

John that's right! For a start I'm 6ft 6in and have a raised seat (30mm or so) - I have tried 3 helmets with my vario screen in high and low positions -

Shoei RAID 2 - not too bad for noise but no ventilation

Shark RSR 2 - a howling gale beating noise almost intolerable even with custom ear plugs - some ventilation.

Arai Condor - noisy but frequency tolerable - no chin ventilation but some air flow at the top

So next weekend it's off with the top half of the vario screen (if I can shift the fixing nuts):nenau

I'm over 2m tall and nothing seems to make any difference (on my GS 1100) to the turbulence. With a small screen it hits me full on and with a high screen around the head. It may be that we just don't have the whizzy range of options that 1150 and 1200 rider have though.

I would guess you don't have an MRA Vario on your 1100.. ok so I'm a little shorter than you at 6'5. but.. I have an xxh seat on my bike which is 37" high.. with the MRA - I get no buffeting at all.. a breeze, yes. but zero turbulence.

I have a Wunderlich Ergo screen. Great piece of kit and used on the Autoroute daily. Setting it up was a little counterintuitive as the highest setting caused terrible buffeting. I lowered the screen to the middle setting and the buffeting disappeared. My advice is to try various combinations and not just think higher is better.

What angle/position have you set the screen at?

Are you over 2m tall too?

I've put the top screen down to its lowest position but the adjusters have seized up so cannot remove it altogether (that was supposed to be the next experiment). Turbulence around helmet appears to have beens reduced. Will try tobinators to lower the angle but retain the clearance over the GPS...

angle.. is as it went on. i did nothing to adjust the angle. position.. doesn't seem to affect the way iy works.. zero turbulence. just; the lower the top part is - the more of a breeze.

I have tried the standard screen on the 1150 at low and middle settings out of curiosity and found the low setting causes loads of head buffet (6 foot 1) but middle setting seems ok.

I did see an R1200 on Saturday in Yarmouth with no screen and liked the look of it..............maybe the fact it was a black one helped ;)

But his thread has me now looking at maybe trying a vario screen
