higher revs, lower oil consumption?

Bought my 1150 GS with 26 k on the clock in October (have now done 31k)

Initially oil consumption was about 250ml/300 miles, when riding the bike frequently between 2500-3000 rpm only.

Am now riding it 'harder' (i.e. not dropping it below 3000 rpm) and oil consumption is falling to about 250ml/500-600 miles:confused: . Have others similar experiences?

Babying the engine will make it take much longer to become "run-in." Start to give it a handful every now & again & it will settle the piston rings into place & reduce consumption.

There is a "however" though........ As a boxer, both pistons move inwards & outwards at the same time so the crankcase volume changes by 1130cc every stroke. For this reason, there is a crankcase breather to prevent the crankcase blowing a seal. When you ride a boxer hard, oil saturated air gets pumped out of the crankcase breather & into the airbox where it goes into the engine & gets burned. It always pays to keep an eye on the oil level & ride it the way you feel happiest.
