Highland petrol stations

No worries.:D

Seriously though, I've been a 'regular' at that place for a long time now - I'll runout to Tongue and then cut back home via Altnaharra or go via Duress/Ullapool/Lairg and have never had any problems at all. The guy always speaks and I've never heard anyone mention him running out of fuel...maybe I've just been lucky.
And the shop has always been reasonably well stocked. You have to bear in mind that it's a small shop on the edge of a small village in a rural community - and there's another shop in the village centre...hardly going to pack it to the gunwhales with unsellable stock, are you?

Regarding what the numpty in Bettyhill told you - I'd take anything they say with a pinch of salt. They can't piss straight let alone give you a straight answer:D

Back to the real issue:

RCE, bear in mind it's 140 miles from Thurso to Ullapool round the North West route, so with a bit of jiggery pokery with a can or one fuel stop you'll be fine.:thumb2

You lucky lucky bugger. :thumb

That is useful as if weather good was thinking of doing something like that.

Have you been on the cat over to Orkney as was thinking of giving it a go?

The usage of felines to cross the Pentland Firth was declared illegal last year.

However, because of this change in law, the Gills Bay ferry now runs a catamaran service to acommodate all those who were previously transported by tabbies.
It's a bit quicker than the Scrabster ferry and brings you into St Margarets Hope as opposed to Stromness. The cat is new 2 seasons ago and a decent service. I believe prices are slightly cheaper than Northlink from Scrabster. It's big and 15 mins faster than the Scrabster ferry.

If you're biking it, then really it's down to personal choice, but I won't give money to Northlink* if I can help it as they run a service with a gubbernment subsidy that would allow Gills Bay cat service to run free of charge if they were given the same subsidy...but that's Scotch politics and none of your concern.....FEB.:D

Whatever you do, you'll have a good crack on Orkeninny.:thumb2

*CalMac with a different hat on.

Bit of a monopoly...

But they were very, very good at sorting out my bike after it got damaged going to Shetland. We feared a battle, but they sorted out to suit me without a penny leaving my pocket. :thumb2

The cat(amaran) :D is a bit cheaper and a bit quicker and is about same distance from Kirkwall, plus with calling into JOG will save riding over to scrabby.

PS If anyone ever goes to scrabster make sure you don't have Radiohead on the ipod or you will drive over the end of the pier in an attempt to end it all :)

What happened to the bike on the Shetland ferry? Was it damaged strapping it to the frames they use? They're Ok but a bugger to secure the bike to if you've got panniers fitted - I know that much.

Only one frame and another bike had that, our two bikes were strapped down to a chain across the deck. The crew didn't appear very confident strapping two bikes without centre stands!

The crossing was a little choppy and it looks like wife's bike slipped over and handle bar end hit my petrol tank so had a bit of a dint, no other damage at all so looks like they got them re-secured pretty quickly.

On the return ferry a oldish guy strapped us to the frames and he did a really good job !

Without prejudice NL asked how I would like the repair doing, I said a new tank is most convenient for me and they asked for the phone number of the dealers. Dealers rang me when tank arrived (£700 quid) and two hours later I had a brand new tank.
