LAST DAY!
Blois to Canterbury. Miles?? Dunno, Don't care any more.
Yes, it was our last day, and to be honest the only highlight of the day needs no explanation. Wow - what a sunrise
We'd set the alarm pretty early and at quarter past seven in the morning I was leaning out the window (first pic!) in me birthday suit!!
It was the usual affair, we'd packed the pannier bags the night before and so loading the bike was a five minute job at most. Coffee, croissants, and onto the motorway.
Red sky in morning shepherds warning? Yep! It rained pretty much all the way home.
Another blat round the periferique, pick up the A16 and chip away at those miles. We actually made pretty good time and got to the Eurotunnel about an hour early. Could we get an earlier train? Nope - there was an earlier problem and there's a two hour dely!
(I think Robin had dropped his pencil down the back of the immigration computer)
Ho hum, more coffee, a bimble round duty free and a gander at the malt whiskies!
The sun shone in kent as we skipped from junctions 11a to 11 and (living barely half an hour from the tunnel) we were home in a jiffy.
And that's it!!
Good holiday!
Would I pre-plan again or go back to winging it?? Ummmm difficult one. The trip to Mirepoix in the rain was a pain in the neck, and if we hadn't have pre-booked we'd have stopped a lot earlier somewhere. But balanced against that, is say the trip to say Sos Del Rey catolico or the first night at Christine and Henri's place - they're not places you're likely to just happen to come across.
I keep a little leather bound journal thing that is slowly being filled up with good routes and hotels I've used. That's probably the best balance - know roughly where yer going and have a few options in mind
The bike behaved impeccably - I put 1/2 a litre of oil in it in the Tarn, and having had it re-mapped it was an absolute joy on the wet hairpins! beautiful crisp smooth throttle!!
That's it!
Now I've got to prep the WR for the Cambrian rally this weekend!!

A great report, Giles, and looks like a fine trip for you both. Glad you enjoyed the Parador at Sos. (Does Rosy know it was my suggestion to have at least one night somewhere posh with a huge bed?!?)
Oh, and it can't have been my pencil causing a hold up on the tunnel. I'm not allowed a pencil - too sharp, you see. All my reports are written in crayon.

Great trip.
This is very much our approach to touring. The nice thing about touring as a couple is that you stop whenever you fancy. We often just stop and sit for an hour or more.
Definitely go for the packed lunches - we now do this most days. Bread, cheese, tomatoes and packet soup. Jetboil, knives and two mugs does it all.

I really enjoyed reading that in a wistful, wish I was there, sort of way. Looks like you had a fab time. We got ever so excited when you mentioned that guys shop was for sale but had to have a little 'reality chat' as we are looking for ways to move out there but still have a couple of years yet before we can...........
