Inspired by @Wapping wanders and my early finish this morning, it gave me the chance to grab images of local places that I thought interesting and varied enough to share here. Plus no traffic allowed easy picture capture.

This has been referenced in a National thread re: overhauled gasworks, so we will start there…






Whilst rat running through the roads in this part of Yarmouth I happened upon one of local successes so here’s a pic of something made, that we like





I ended up near the power station too, and a significant, output capacity upgrade project continues there, I passed the large transformer compound and only today noticed the brickwork stating who owned it…




The town is having millions invested in it, ( National Lottery & Government) but the nostalgic nods to engineering and fishing highlight when the town was bustling and worth visiting. As teenagers we’d get minibuses over from Lowestoft to chance our arm with the local ladies, plus you could guess the rotation of the oil and gas workers, by who was out and about.

And there was grab a granny (over 25s) at the Winter Gardens, another venue undergoing an Historic restoration

A fairly new addition to Kings Cross is the rather innovative and expensive conversion of the circular gas storage units into very expensive flats.

I’ve always wondered whether the gasometer flats, suffer from the same problem as offices in the City’s gherkin? That of wasted space, as we live in a ‘square world’ which doesn’t suit curved outer walls, which results in wasted space.

I always used to wonder at the boarded-up pubs on the dockside, and the lives that had passed through.

So tonight I was voluntold for the fun activity of taking FiL to see the free fireworks. So I took the chance to capture

The Winter Gardens



then it’s time to mention the neighbouring site Wellington Pier which is currently undergoing some privately funded extensions.

I’ve always wondered whether the gasometer flats, suffer from the same problem as offices in the City’s gherkin? That of wasted space, as we live in a ‘square world’ which doesn’t suit curved outer walls, which results in wasted space.

A dear friend and neighbour grew up as the son of a lighthouse keeper in the far north of Scotland. At a dinner party, and in language that would make Billy Connolly blush, he described some of the inconveniences of living in a conical house, when I mentioned the price of a local (converted) Martello tower that was up for sale.

I imagine cylindrical premises are marginally better.

It was the age of Space Invaders and Great Yarmouth delivered, much to the thanks of Mum & Dad.

Had a few holidays around the Great Yarmouth area in the early 80s usually involving a show at the Britannia Pier, Lenny Henry, Cannon and Ball, Freddie Starr, Jimmy Cricket etc proper rib tickling stuff, a trip to the circus and the amusement and funfair great times, only went in the waxworks once, it was shocking in the fact that the likenesses were very poor to say the least, is it still open?

I haven't been back for years, I expect it's changed a bit and slightly wary of going back and spoiling such fond memories of the place.

Great Yarmouth was my second home for around about 10 years, travelling by Artic truck ( Mercedes 1621 single sleeper or a 1626 twin bunk sleeper ) coupled to an, in those days ( 1984-1994 ) a 40 ft flat trailer, or an extendable 40-65 ft flat trailer.
Travelling twice weekly from Aberdeen to Montrose, loading up Oil Related Equipment, and off down to Great Yarmouth docks area.
Took 2 days getting there and 2 or 3 days getting back home. Sometimes having to wait for a backload. Really enjoyable part of my driving career.

The Pier has had a significant re-furb and is doing well, Jimmy Carr and Sarah Millican are recent performers.

Circus is well supported and going strong, Lottery funded projects include a Circus training academy housed in the
The Old Icehouse Which is a great re-purpose of an old fishing industry place.

I haven't been back for years, I expect it's changed a bit and slightly wary of going back and spoiling such fond memories of the place.

The sea front and the tourist bits are still buoyant and pleasant, The Venetian Waterways are a nice place to spend time, again refurbbed via National Lottery.

The town has its challenges of course too, loss of Oil and Gas work has left lots of abandoned buildings, the huge guesthouses no longer host families for seaside breaks but are Homes of Multiple Occupancy which get used for cultivating leisure use plants/pharmaceutical’s. Sometimes they catch fire

Kettle on/beer in fridge and space for secure bike/car/motorhome parking if you ever wanted to go for a stroll down memory lane. No obligation to talk to me either
Plus you and Mrs Lol can visit the stables too.

Took 2 days getting there and 2 or 3 days getting back home.

My truck-spotting skills can assure you the route is still a regular, by a couple of Hauliers with depots in Yarmouth.
Grampian and Lubbers are two of the most notable

I used to be sub-contracted for both of these companies locally, later on, in 2011-2013 who each had depots in Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth, and elsewhere.
Many English haulage companies, wouldn't make the trip up North, for lack of back loads to their home city again, after dropping off in Aberdeen.
Hence the reason we had full loads both directions. Sometimes I had to travel across country to Fleetwood for a back load of empty wooden fish boxes stacked from front to back and as high on the trailer, over 900 stinking from rotten star fish and fish scales.........yuck! I stank all the way home. Tip: was to be nice to the planners in the Aberdeen Office.

A lot of our visiting temporary residents do graft though, as evidenced by the half dozen busses running them to the various meat production factories at Eye, Attleborough and so on.

A family friend who has a company provided BMW X5 with bright bodywork and a boot full of toys is tasked regularly to maintain a visible presence.

Had some lovely family holidays down there when we were kids before buying a static caravan at Potter Heigham and eventually my Mam & Dad moving there.
