You need do nothing. Even though tax is free when it’s next due to be taxed you’ll still receive a tax renewal letter, exactly the same as if you had to pay for tax.
If you’ve just bought the vehicle you’ll need to do exactly the same as you would a newer vehicle. Tax it (no cost) online using the details on your new log book .. for the most it’ll ask if the vehicle has been significantly altered from original. Just tick the “No” box. Job done.
I have 6 historic vehicles. I’ve never had to fill in a form at the post office or had any palaver.
All done very simply online.

Agreed - my method was for changing tax class to historic and applying for zero rated tax on the first occasion.

After that - it’s dead easy

Every time one of my vehicles qualified as historic, I taxed online and paid as normal, the DVLA then contacted me, gave me a refund and changed the status to historic.
All done for me

Thanks for the reply... I sorted it and things are legal... Forgot about Sorn and received a slightly pointless letter from the DVLA the same day I "taxed" it... Easy to forget when you pick up in a van straight to the garage... 1st time for me!

The qualifying period runs from April until April, if you get what I mean .. if your vehicle is 40 years old in May, you can’t register it as historic until next April ..
