Agreed - my method was for changing tax class to historic and applying for zero rated tax on the first occasion.You need do nothing. Even though tax is free when it’s next due to be taxed you’ll still receive a tax renewal letter, exactly the same as if you had to pay for tax.
If you’ve just bought the vehicle you’ll need to do exactly the same as you would a newer vehicle. Tax it (no cost) online using the details on your new log book .. for the most it’ll ask if the vehicle has been significantly altered from original. Just tick the “No” box. Job done.
I have 6 historic vehicles. I’ve never had to fill in a form at the post office or had any palaver.
All done very simply online.
After that - it’s dead easy
