Hit a damn deer today

Hi folks,

I was out riding today on my 2000 1150GS and center punched a small doe, about 36 inches at the shoulders. Luckly, I did not go down but sort of went right over her, after she trashed my PIAA 540s, light bar, front fender, gas tank and beak. Felt like a really BIG speed bump. Have to give credit to the telelever, as I was able to maintain control. Only damage to my body is a sore right wrist where the handle bars jerked to the left.

Driving away from the seen of the carnage, it seemed that I had to steer slightly to the left to keep the bike going straight. In looking at the bike from the front, the beak assembley seems to be pointing slightly left and the front wheel slightly to the right after I get the handle bars pointed straight ahead.

I will be talking to the insurance adjuster tomorrow, but I thought I should take it to the dealer and have him look at it there, after the dealer checks it out. Several questions:

1. What should I look for in the beak/headlight area that would cause the beak assembly to point to the left, from in front of the bike? (It is also pulled slightly away from the tank.)

2. How can I tell if the forks are twisted/bent?

3. Is it possible to bend the frame?

4. How would I check for a bent frame?

5. Any other ideas other than trying harder to miss the damn things when they jump in front of me?

Best regards,

Vince

I hope you took it home & eat it, the forks will twist on an impact like this, but there is probably no actual damage, the bolts in the fork brace & headstock are not particulary tight to allow the forks to twist a bit without damage, the bolts only clamp the forks, if you undo the brace & headstock bolts you'll probably find you can set it straight again with a length of timber till the beak is in line again, don't loosen the beak this will be your reference point.

My little off roader did the same and i was told they are not so tight for this very reason, so they'll give a bit without bending and I straightend it no problem.

I'd imagine it'd be a bit banged up to be edible really, and you can't really sling it in the boot on a bike.

Don`t know about Georgia but in many states it is illegal to take road kill home anyway. The law is there to stop people in humvee type vehicles from splattering the wild life on purpose for cheap grub. Don`t remember it saying anything about motorbike roadkill though. :D

Look out the window, see that tree?

good.

it needs a hug.

heh, I've seen an onbike video of a deer strike. Made a big mess of bambi, the bike, and the rider. googling....

Deer Crash Video

Actually the other one was 'better' but I'll have to look harder...

Here we go...

Deer Crash Video 2.

I think I'll keep out of Richmond park then.

So have any of you got anything constructive to say to help the guy out.

Hi Kbikeman,
You were very lucky, not to hurt your self or damage your bike more.
My chum Tod, a GS1150 man over in New Mexico, had spent 3 months preparing a trip to the Artic circle . Within 80 miles (in broad daylight) of what was to be a 2000 mile trip he had a large buck deer jump on him, not in front of him but right on his bike, broke his wrist and arm and wrote off the GS! He was in plaster for 2 months, so consider your self lucky.
cheers
Barrie.
