Hit reserve today - and it got me thinking

When the fuel tank hits reserve the 'trip' displays the remaining miles in the tank (depending on average fuel consumption etc. etc.).

It got me wondering if there is a 'fix' to permanently display the remaining miles in the tank...

I have seen and tested the fix to turn off the headlights (won't use that one - I like the light on)

Surely the software is there as demonstrated when the reseve level is hit, therefore there must be a back door that will permanently display the miles before empty. It has to be better than the excuse of a fuel guage that is standard on the GS!

Anyone haerd of a way?

The 'range' feature is part of the 'computer' option. Obviously your bike wasn't fitted with it - it was a £150 option when I bought mine.

I've never heard of a way of activating this feature without having the computer option fitted.

I guess that's the point. The software is already installed but not selected as an option - I bought the bike second hand so had no choice.

I recon (as with many 'options') the functionality is already there but the £150 option is just a 'setting' somewher that needs to be unlocked.

Has anyone had the 'computer option' fitted at a later date? I bet it is a simple code setting!!!

How are you going to toggle between the options: Av speed / av MPG / DTE etc?

The 'miles left in the tank' is an addition to the trip miles so should be no problem.

I guess the reserve is triggered by the float position in the tank - if I can just frig that I reckon I will have a continuous 'miles to go' reading. Now where is that circuit diagram...

It's obviously programmed to come on at a specific fuel level, IMHO if you did "frig" that then it will always show the same, low, fuel level. Not forgetting, the range indication isn't that accurate until it gets low anyway!

Chaps, a question slightly relating to this thread.....
I have a 5 day old 650gs, tank filled, average MPG showing as 65+ but the range is only quoting about 120? I beleive its about a 4 gallon tank and when i was at school this would have given a range in excess of 240 miles! Does this take a while to settle down or has the maths changed as i've gotten older???

Check it against BuMW's fig's

Fuel consumption per 100 km at constant 90 km/h 3.7 litres
Fuel consumption per 100 km at constant 120 km/h 5.2 litres

Usable tank volume 16.0 litres

16 / 3.7 = 4.32 = 432 kms = 270 miles
16 / 5.2 = 3.07 = 307 kms = 191 miles

Except you are not on a smooth banked test track circle / oval with a fixed throttle and a constant speed.

Thanks Wapping, looks like i've been riding it too fast then:augie me, a novice, think i'll keep an eye on it over the next few weeks and check with the dealer when it goes in for its 1st service :thumb

Are you sure it's showing "120" miles, or is it ">120" miles? It takes a while to settle on the F800GS, but on a full tank never shows the full range, just "over a certain number of" miles.

And it's not quite a 4 gallon tank either, that would put it over 18 litres - can't remember the exact size, but it's more like 17 litres (cue someone posting the exact size?). I did get exactly 199.8 miles out of mine on the M6 once, before the engine cut out. It rolled to a halt with 8 miles still showing on its range display...:blast

On my 650 twin on a steady commute I easily get 210 actual miles and about 44 miles to go. Never taken it much below that as the low fuel light is on or about to come on and I don't want to mess about pushing a bike to work / home.

Usually get about 140 miles before the > symbol goes out and then it counts down. IIRC you can get over 17 litres into the tank if you're carefull / it's on the side stand / right to the top of the neck :augie

Thereby demonstrating the folly of relying on it to tell you when the tank may be empty

Har-har! :D

Indeed...

However it could have been worse. I'd just turned onto the service area's slip road when the bike cut out, and managed to coast to within 50 yards of the pumps. If I'd actually believed the range counter, I'd have been on a different motorway, aiming for another SA that was 10 miles further away.

So... I was relying on the range reading, but I wasn't believing it. :D

If all bikers were forced to start their careers on a Puch Maxi like I was, this situation would be a thing of the past :aidan
