Given current finances i can afford a 1200 GS with about 30 - 40K on the clock or i have seen an 1150GS with 10K, both have FSH.
Also given some of the mechanical concerns of the 1200 is a higher milage one better as any probs should have happened ?

Condition and service history are the first considerations.

After that factor in extras (a set of panniers is going to set you back £500 if they aren't included).

Finally have both bikes got heated grips, do you want ABS and have they got cast or spoked wheels.

I wouldn't let the mileage be a factor unless one has over 100k and the other has only 10k.

Then I'd buy the 1150 :hide

Ride anywhere in nice weather and 1200s seem to be spawning directly out of the tarmac - they're everywhere. You'll be able to get a decent secondhand one for years to come.

On the other hand the 1150 is a modern classic - get a good one while you can.

The 1150 may be a bit heavier and slower, but it's still a fantastically usable, enjoyable and sweet-handling bike. Characterful too, but in a good way.

BTW I have an 1100 and a 1200 and I must admit the 1200 is a much more modern-feeling ride. The 1100 feels rather tractorish after the perky 1200, and yet I still really enjoy riding it, and have had some fantastic tours on it.

In the end they're all big GSs and all have the magic. Enjoy.

Definitely go for the 1150,it's the only way you'll know when you come to get a 1200 just how good it is.:augie
Seriously, although I prefer my 1200gs to the 1150 gsa that I had I enjoyed my 1150 immensely and as someone has already said good 1150's are becoming scarce.
Which ever you choose they both have their own pro's and con's.

In that situation I would have the 1150:thumb2

Have you ridden both models ?

To me they are completely beasts, i test rode several (new) 1150's and just could not get on with them, but as soon as i got on a (new ) 1200 :thumb2

If you like the ride on both models i would go for the 1150 just because of the mileage.

That's because BMW wanted the 1200 to appeal to riders of Japanese bikes, make it easy to ride, drain away the character but keep the anomalies.... :augie

They failed, it is nothing like any Jap bike, and I have had shed loads of them from 50's to 1400's, two strokes, four strokes, singles twins, fours and ridden every combination of inline, V's and everything else out of japan over the last 30 years.

The BMW never appealed to me, even when I was handing over the dosh I still had no idea why, I think the 1200 has a great character, it ain't no jap bike, it vibes, is relatively underpowered and theoretically cannot get close to most modern Jap bikes for handling, let alone performance.

But riding it is very enjoyable, especially on the typical British road at relatively sensible speeds, a trick none of my Jap bikes from the last 20 years could pull off, they all only provided fun at way above the legal limit, and required decent roads.

I too was worried about reliability so got a low mileage 1200, personally I wanted one with under 10k so I can use it for a few years and get rid of it before it hits the 40k you are talking about, many here will say they last much longer, but I do not have that much faith.

Buyers market though, so maybe in the depths of winter you could get a lower mileage 12 within budget, can't comment on 1100 / 1150, but must admit I am intrigued to try one after comments on this forum.

All i can say i had a 1200 gs after having a go on a friends 1150gsa i got rid of the 1200 to get a 1150 gsa how can any one say these bikes are similar beats me very different to ride depends what your after 1200 i think you have to work harder throttle, gears, clutch where the 1150 is just a tank it will pull in any gear and seens more planted to the road, i could chase sports bike riders on the 1200 but would not even consider it on the 1150 both good but very different 1150 suits me sir:thumb

Having owned both I would say the 1150 is plusher albeit a bit more lardy, the 1200 certainly has a bit more go if you need it.

Long range touring is where the 1150 worked best for me, it just eats the miles up which the 1200 for me never quite managed.

These days I ride an R1200R :thumb2

I`ve had various versions of the 1100/1150 and 1200 over the years, up to the latest 2010 and I always seem to go back to the 1100 or1150. Find a good one Badgerman has one for sale at the moment, which I used to own and would buy back again if I had the spare cash. Dont be hung up on mileage, condition is more important than age.
