well there in lies the problem,

local garda have admitted they dont have the manpower to act on these calls so could be hour or so before they are out if lucky

I've got the icam app for iPhone. It hooks me up with my webcam/laptop and sends me instant notification if it senses movement. Also sends live feed to my phone and records stills on an external hardrive(wirelessly in case they rob my laptop). If they do take my laptop chances are that I'll have a nice clear pic of them leaning over it as they take it. Coupled with an alarm, extremely nosey neighbours and two terrifying Yorkshire terriers, I reckon I'm safe enough. Also, if they try to take my bike they'll have to drive it without a clutch which is no fun!
