Just thought I'd mention my 24k service cost me around £280 and a Saturday and a Sunday afternoon.

Admittedly, the majority of that cost was a GS911, with the rest on oils, grease and spark plugs from Opie Oils (discount for UKGSER subscribers). I also splashed out on a plug cap puller from Marc Parnes (ok - I'm a sucker for nicely machined bits of metal), a set of those nice Wurth feeler gauges from Maverick and a spark plug spanner from Halfords :mmmm.

Setting aside two weekend afternoons, I printed out Jim von Baden's 'HOWTO do the 24k service and got down to it.

I also took the pads out and cleaned them and the calipers up(toothbrush and a bit of car shampoo in water), greasing them etc in the process - something a garage doesn't do! Still on the OE pads and there's quite a bit of life left in them! Must rider harder.... :P

A also did the annual 'take off the alternator belt cover and spray behind it with waxoil' thing - I have zero corrosion on the front engine cover :)

Having just bought a load of oil from [url-http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160150]fatal[/url] I'm even more 'quids in' now!

Home servicing really isn't difficult, just time consuming...... And it's nowhere near as difficult as you think. And no, I don't give a stuff about resale values, as I'm riding this bike into the ground.

Sounds like a great plan. With my GSA in warranty for another 4 months it will have one more dealer service and then I will be attempting to do it myself as well. Compared to two services a year and extended warranty the savings will be huge. Did you actually need the GS911 for the service or is that only for diagnosing an actual fault? Did you do the brake/clutch fluid changes? These concern me most with my average mechanical skills.

How much can you expect to pay at a dealer for a 24000 service?

Mine is due.

You could always try calling a few dealers up and ask them..... :nenau

Somewhat more reliable than asking on here I think :thumb

I didn't 'need' the GS911 - but it reported 'no faults' - but I got it a bit cheap as part of a group buy. It's that 'sucker for shiny new toys' complex again :( I'm going to try the new software that makes the throttle balance procedure 'easier'/'different'/'more accurate'/'significantly more expensive'* this weekend I think (£4 for the DIY vacuum measurer and a couple of hundred to lock the throttle bodies:blast::blast)

I've an '07 non servo GS, so brake fluid changes are as easy as it gets - http://www.jimvonbaden.com/R1200_07-09_Updates.html or here it is on ADVRider - http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=461342) I'm not 'long' enough to pump the brake lever and release the left hand bleed nipple comfortably, so I prefer doing this with two people - one to pump and one to bleed, IYSWIM....

The clutch fluid is 'for life' I think - I figure that so long as the clutch works the fluid's ok. It's not like it's being worked hard or anything...... :nenau
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=179606 if you're 'keen'

Again, I've not had any seals/bearings go/leak, so routine servicing has been just that....

The only things I got stuck on were not buying a new crush washer for the gearbox drain plug and panicking when I thought I'd put gearbox oil in the final drive and vice versa!

The only thing I'll 'get done' rather than 'DIY' is the alternator belt in about 6 months time.

*YMMV.....

I'd agree with all that, You don't really need the GS-911 to do the standard service items, it'll just tell you stuff like if any bulbs have blown, and I can think of a cheaper way to check that! Anything more serious and you'll probably know about it anyway..

GST if you're worried about self servicing and things like ABS servo/fluid change, Steve Grover at Motoscot is only round the corner from you in Caddington. He's dealer trained and equipped. :thumb2

Nice Thread, I too have an 07 GS non servo its going into Vines in the new year for the 12000 service and fuel pump change- seem I have a dodgy one. But after that it will be home servicing for me. Might have to come and pick your brains. Thanks for the links.

Could I......................I didn't realise that, the things you learn on here eh ???? :augie

Well, if you're in the learning mood, how about using 'Search' on here? A quick use of it brought up this thread:-

Imagine that! A whole thread concerning your very request!

And it's free to subscribers! Who'd have thought:nenau

:P

If you are going to offer similar advice to everyone asking a question on here that can be answered by phoning a dealer then you are going to be mighty busy.....good luck in your quest.

Neil, I did my 36,000 miles service last week, no idea how much it cost me as I already had the oil and filters sitting in the garage from last time but probably no more than £40 all-in. I have a K&N so that gets cleaned, fitted new spark plugs which really needed doing and made a big difference, and also changed the RH lower coil due to corrosion (which made no change at all).

No fault codes on the GS911, and I did my own ServoABS fluid change a year ago so not due for another 12 months.

Ditto about resale value and riding this one until she can take no more, which will probably be around 2020 at the rate I use the bike recently.

I'm probably gonna make myself an alternator belt tool one day if I can get to see what BWM use themselves.

Coil corrosion is something to worry over - it's the left upper one on mine that's the worst.

Most threads on changing the belt seem to conclude that 'getting it done' is well worth the money compared to the DIY approach.

I'll write up the GS911 throttle balance procedure I think, as I can't see that anyone else has. My mirrors vibrate more than I rememeber them doing after the 24k service, so I guess it's 'time'....

Just had a 24k service by RWF Motorcycles in Alfreton Derbys, done according to the BM spec sheet, £225 inc oils, filters and plugs.

Just wondered if anyone knows the cheapest place to buy a GS-911 (Oct 2010), Touratech are asking £346.48 + shipping and I've never known them to be the cheapest.

Thanks

Alt Belt Change

Hi Guys, I am very average in the spannering department, but I must tell you that changing the belt is a sinch ! The only special tools you need are a big shiney 34mm combination spanner from Halfords, and a fag packet sized piece of stiff plastic, a piece of 2l milk container will do. Remove the front cover, then the noise deadening foam found underneath. Jam the piece of plastic into the bottem pulley where the belt runs into the grooves. Put spanner onto top nut, and crank round, and lo, the belt will come off - easy peasy. You will then look at the belt, and think that it looks good for another 24 K ! To continue, grab the wife and a 12 inch ruler. Fit the belt to the top pulley, get the wife on her knees, she should hold the belt onto the top pulley with the ruler, as it may try and ride off when you are easing the belt on. Using the palm of left hand, ease the belt onto the bottom pulley while turning the top nut with spanner ! It really is that simple !!

I stole this info from other threads on this site, so no claps for me, I can type better that searching for the link, cheers dave, 2007 GS, 30k miles in 19 months ! Awesome with Accel Module !

Belt over top pulley, hold it onto the bottom pulley as far as it will go on the L/H side of the bike with your thumb, then tap the starter button. :thumb
