I am organising a long weekend in Normandy next May and I am considering Honfleur as a suitable place to stay.

Has anybody any experience of staying there, any suggestions with regard to hotels, restaurants etc?

Ta all:thumb2

Hi,

We stayed there last year. Fantastic little town. We stayed at the ETAP which was cheap and cheerful and a couple of minutes stroll into the town centre. There is a wee place called 'Le Bar' in the town centre. Great atmosphere and friendly owner. Food was good. Its a tiny place and the night we were in we were the only tourists, which for us was a bonus.
Magic place.

Cheers

Bob

+ 1... however, on sunny days in the season it's crammed to bursting with members of the sailing fraternity and thousands of wannabees and hangers-on, so eateries and bars tend to be both full and expensive. Best visited out of season imho.

Is mid-May considered out of season?

I was there on a very rainy day in May this year on the way back from LeHog. Packed out with day trippers.

DaveG stays there. The two LeHogs we've done he's stayed there both times on the way back home

I like Honfleur.

It's popular and can get crowded but it has a nice vibe, plenty of places to eat and drink and funny little shops to explore if that's your bag.

May shouldn't be too busy it's during the summer months it's most chocka.

I like to use it as a stopoff on some of my trips and I find it makes a nice aperitif at the start of a trip or a decent last night:)

ETAP is practically in the centre and cheap so plus one for that, the IBIS is a 10 minute walk out of the quaint centre but there's loads of B&B's too.

I'll try and dig out some of the nicer ones I've stayed in.

I often stop over there before getting the Le Harve ferry, can't help with hotels though as I use the campsite.

Loads of nice restruants, just pick one:beerjug:

Stayed at the Motel Les Bluets last year- a very pleasant little place just on the edge of town, a ten minute walk from the centre.
Very reasonably priced and nice accommodation. I'd happily stay again :thumb2

As above, Etap now probably Ibis Budget is 200mts from the harbour/basin, very central, there are lots of trippers as it's a very picturesque place but lots of meal choices and bars too, my favourite stop. Park up right outside reception.:thumb

Popular destination for tourist types, so plenty of restaurants to chose from.

Attractive enough down at the harbour, the rest typical French town, flattened in the war and rebuilt.

Lots of petrol stations and hotels.

Restaurant L'Escale, Honfleur

Very nice restaurant behind the Hotel de Ville - http://www.lescale-honfleur.com/ - close to the Ibis & Mercure hotels. Pleasant cafe's along the edge of the Old Harbour (Vieux Basin)

Apart from passing through en route to Arromaches-les-Bains earlier this year, have only sailed ever there (and slept on board) so can't comment on hotels etc.

Stayed here last year, cheapish and basic but well placed within 5/10 minutes walk from the main harbour area, bikes looked away behind gates in the parking area to the front of the hotel.

Can also recommend 'le Bar' on way back to hotel far a late drink.

Definitely a great place, looks a bit naff from the outside but actually really nice. Helpful owners and they lend you bicycles for free for pottering about on. Quite cheap too. Welcoming to motorcyclists.

Sorry only just remembered - when you go to Honfleur it's well worth looking out the Erik Satie museum. I know it sounds as dull as ditchwater but it's a great laugh, very surreal, and you get the chance to pedal on an indoor roundabout whilst sitting on a medicine ball
