I intend to fit a horn to the bike that will hopefully wake the dead, i gather from the forum that the Stebel Nautilus is a good buy. I was curious if anyone had any experience of the Stebel Magnum which gives similar volume but according to the online tech info is a little smaller

Get down you local car accessory shop and get a couple of ferkin loud horns for £12

The magnum is a single tone horn and is loud, you will need two of 'em for the twintone sound, and it does make a difference having the twintone.
The Nautilus is a twintone in a small package easy to fit, you'll need to make a little bracket to mount it, if you want to hear one both myself and Simon M have 'em.

You can get 'em at Motorists Discount shops.

Yes you can - I've wired an additional horn in parallel to the original on my 1200. Works fine.

The whole issue of the single wire system seems to be a bit confusing ... most of the wiring on the 1200 is standard 12v stuff. There are just several "black boxes" on the bike which are control units - these speak to each other and the computer via the CAN bus but the supply to all the lights, horns etc is standard 12V - from the control units rather than from the switches as on a "normal" bike.

As long as you don't exceed the allowed current draw for any given circuit, you can connect anything you like to it. In my case, an additional horn seems to be fine on the horn circuit. If you draw too much current on a circuit, the control unit shuts it down - just like a fuse. If this were the case you can easily use a relay and draw power direct from the battery. Several people have done this already to mount additional lights.

You'll get away with lights due to the variance on lamp wattages, but I tried to fit a Nautilus to a 1200 via a relay with and without the original horn in place to no avail, without the original in place the 12v supply was not there the PLC shut it down, with the original horn in place the supply was there but the relay energised and released immediatley without the original horn sounding.

I do believe that there is now a box of tricks to allow you to connect up to 4 devices via the ignition.

Did you use a Nautilus or something else ??

I used a "Seger" horn that I bought from a car shop. Simply wired in parallel with the OE horn.

I cannot see a logical reason why, if the circuit can drive two horns, it will not drive the OE horn and a relay ... most odd.

You are correct though that the circuit is shut down if there is not enough current flowing, for example simply a relay by itself.
