I'm struggling to know where to start with this one. The bike starts and runs ok, but the speedo, rev counter, lights, indicators, horn, fuel gauge etc. are all dead.

The canbus measures 60ohms at both the ABS and ZFE modules.

Using Motoscan I can control modules from the ZFE - turn lights on/off, sound the horn etc. Also I can run ABS functions such as brake bleed. The ABS works.

By the fact that I can do all of this, doesn't that imply that the canbus is functioning correctly?

Heeeelp!

If i recall canbus is data lines,

Have you got 12v at the pinouts on the ZFE for lights etc

are any faults shown on the motoscan app ?

The only fault is on the ABS module - no data received from ZFE
I can turn the lights etc. on and off using Motoscan.

I've done some more fiddling, and it seems the ZFE is not receiving any inputs - eg horn button, indicator buttons.

Feeling like the ZFE is dead now.

Check the terminal shown circled in red on this diagram to see if you have 12v with the ignition switch in the run position. I am pretty sure this is a diagram for a 2006. If there is no voltage check at the ignition switch as it seems that wire feeds the ABS and ZFE as a switched live.

All I can say is to slow down STOP and Work things in stages and Diagnose the problem

A wiring diagram would be the place to start!

ACTUALLY, NO!! When did the change occur?? That is the starting point!

Did you replace the battery and wire it incorrectly ?? Fitted an Accessory ??? crossed a 12v to 5 v Feed??

But with all things Electrical ..... they require power and grounds?? CAN usually 5v but still power and ground!!

Do you have all of the power and grounds that the bits are supposed to have ??

Any wires rubbed / chafed?

Oh and use an Incandescent bulb tester NOT an LED type

LEDs and Digital Voltmeters give false positives, because they draw so little current and can show 12.5 v when a bulb will quite possibly not even glow !!

Thanks, I will check, but, since Motoscan can talk to the ZFE it must have power
<edit> I got the year wrong, it's actually a 2008 bike, but I think the same as 2006

I've seen this post, or one very like it before. It's quite generic and doesn't really help.

New (used) ZFE arrived today, from a 2011 bike. Most things appears to work, haven't tried the ESA yet. It may need reflashing, which (I think) only BMW or a company called Carmo I found in Holland, can do.

anyone can flash it at home - all files hosted in the big bad world and copies of tools on ebay - but its not a tool for the fool hardy

if you are getting that far - you may as well double check the coding using GS911 or motoscan

Any hints what to search for? I have the ultimate version of Motoscan but it won't change eg the VIN. It's not super important though - everything seems to work - I got luck with the options.

its not cheap as the multiplexer to send multiple comms at the same time down the diagnostic port is required too

and then it gets complex - various copies run odd firmware and the drive need the bike version as well as the car stuff - beware its all sharks and viruses

the names of the gear come along when you search stuff like ISTAP, ICOM A3 or ICOM NEXT, RHINEGOLD

often looked here and wonder if they are the DBs https://www.obdexpress.co.uk/search/?q=BMW+ICOM&DirID=

BMW software (Win10 X64 Version)

Diagnostic programming system ISTA - V4.52.21
SDP database - V4.52.31 (supports multiple languages)
VIN data date - 2024.12
ISTA-P - V70.0.200 (supports BMW motorcycle and electric vehicle programming)
for BMW ETK - 2019.12
for BMW KSD - 2019.12
INPA - V5.06
winkfp - V5.3.1
NCS - V4.0.1
BMWAi refresh hidden function - V4.6
E-SYS - V3.30, database version V71.0
E-PLUS - V3.81
DR.GINI B022
Latest FSC navigation code calculation software and IBAC code calculation device.

then of course nothing works without Daten files - all the actual software you update.... this would cover any air cooled GS
SP Daten v71 and ecu daten

you don't need all 25 gig of updates !!!! just the K24 folder

Thanks - that all looks a bit scary. I dabbled in some free/pirated Renault CLIP stuff a while back and decided it wasn't worth the risk. This looks similar. I did see that iCarsoft are doing BMW bikes, I have their car scanner and it's quite good.

yes but ONLY the BM tool can update the version of software to a later or more appropriate file

Hi, did you ever manage to sort this as I have a very similar problem at the moment?
