Hot Starting Issues — 1250 GSA

Battery
Malfunctions
With All Motorrads
Changed the battery twice since 2019. The two last ones were not Exide, but Motobatt. Even with the new battery sometimes it struggles. Luckily I carried a battery jumper pack to get me started the last time. But normal behaviour is, leave the bike for 10 mins and it starts again fine, which leads to the compression theory. Sold it now, so not bothered :)

I’m sorry didn’t realise I couldn’t join a discussion if I no longer owned the bike. Silly me, bought new in 2019 and I sold it last month.
I apologise mate didn't mean any offence, merely getting confused with what you wrote. Honestly, I don't blame you for selling it after the consistent issues you had. If it wasn't for Adam's recommendation which got my attention on the Hybrid CCA350 I would have been in the same boat... fuel stop after fuel stop, facepalm after facepalm. Classic case of accountants standing in the way of engineers is the fact of the matter 😐

All the best :)

No issues. I didn't sell the bike because of the starting issues, it was a brilliant bike. It was just time for a change, I wanted something different, also have a R100CS, so didn't need two 1000cc bikes.

Indeed, it doesn't sound like the valve clearance adjustment going off what I've learnt recently, good call though, merely the lower CCA is just way Way WAY too weak for the GSA from the OEM battery. Would potentially save you a small fortune going with the latter, too... Had to order mine from Italy as there wasn't any in the UK last month 😄 good luck!
Might be completely irrelevant but I had terrible hot starting problems with a K1300. Apparantly a known common problem. There was a recall and BMW installed a parallel earth wire kit between the battery and starter which sorted the problem with my bike. (bought it as areplacement for a GSA, traded it in 3 months later for my present 2018 1200 gsa - nuff said)

Cheers Jeff, it definitely sounds relevant to me although I'm not sure if any of the other guys have heard of this one either? Even the technicians at my local Motorrad dealership never mentioned itas a possibility. What was the year on the recall with your K1300 if you don't mind me asking? On another note, the hybrid battery is going strong

Hi All,

Had bike doing it party trick of not starting, Been on a a Run ( Poker run from Forre ) done over a 100 miles that day from home, all good, Stop to get a Card and bike started 1st time, Colleague on K1300 had hot start issue, So we waited 10 mins his started mine wouldn't. Bugger..... Waited 20 mins no joy, then a supports bike an folded side stand up and bike started?

Bike ran perfectly rest of run, now i don't think issue is to do with side stand ( as engine tried to turn over ) but wondering if retracting it cause some resetting of electrical its brain ? I did have similar luck with opening and shutting Petrol cap in past ?

May work for sum-body out there ?

My 2109 bike did this after six months on New Years Day 2020 and I missed a ride out. BMW replaced the battery under warranty. It lives on an Optimate. Despite this it did the same thing in April 2024 after riding for about an hour then stopping for 10 minutes to pick up a sample on a blood bike run.

I replaced the battery with a Yuasa YTX14H-BS (240CCA) - as reccomended on this forum, and have not experienced the issue since.

I also invested in a NOCO Boost GB40: 1000A UltraSafe Jump Starter Power Pack for peace of mind which lives with the bike. I haven't had to use it on my bike but have used it on two 1250s on rideouts which have also exibited this problem. With the jump pack attached they started instantly and behaved for the rest of the day.....

Motorbatt Hybrid has been an absolute gamechanger here, best purchase over the last year for sure, no added jump starters and other gadgets, just a Hybrid battery and total consistency.

Been stranded a couple of times with the 'no second start for you, laddie' problem. Just put the Motobatt MHTX16 Hybrid Lithium Battery in and 3 cold starts in a row easily. The difference is noticable instantly, the start is now immediate.

You've reminded me to fit mine. It's been sat in the shed for over 2 months!

I'm a few years in with the Hybrid battery and still never had an issue since I fitted it.

So this morning I gave myself a few potential issues due to being a lazy bast@rd.

Got the machine uncovered and wheeled out from its house, but couldn't be arsed pushing it 10 metres (shame on me) so I fired it up and crept forward.
My justification was that I had to be on it to get it through the gate. Safely on the drive (probably 3 mins later) I switched it off & went indoors and got changed into riding kit.
Back out to it after 15 mins, top box on and started whilst I put my gloves on, and the TFT screen went mad...

I accepted these messages (left flick of wonder wheel) which left the warning triangle illuminated. Knew my pointless short use had maybe wasted some battery life I figured I would press on to Autoglass, simple 25 minutes/13 mile trip including NSL dual carriageway. Switched it off, did the car handover etc and within ten minutes, I started bike up and no issues, rode it another 38 miles to work and all good.

Thanks to this forum and advice, I know the doom and gloom messages come up, but if you get charge into the system they go away without the need to attend a specialist workshop.

I had those messages when I stalled mine and it didn't fire straight back up. I'd ridden for a good 30 minutes. They since cleared.
I swapped my 4 years old battery out for the Motobatt on Saturday and expect it to be good for long time.
