After a recent camping trip on the outskirts of Kilkenny, Ireland and a night of freezing rain and driving wind I was saved by a trip to a Guineys (If you know, you know).

I picked up a fleece-covered hot water bottle for €5.

Second night my feet were toasty and I was able to sleep through the night (Well one more fill up at 3am at the open kitchen )

Once emptied the hot water bottle went into the right hand pannier along with my sleeping bag and inner liner with no discernible difference in closing the pannier.

Recommended piece of kit if a little old-school. (Or maybe I am getting older and feeling the cold more).

Can’t beat the old hottie bottle for camping better to have it and not need
It than need it and not have it ,about the having to refill it in the middle of the night is a pisser though did the same wild camping on Bodmin Moore in September .maybe those reusable hand warmers might be an alternative.
The ones that you snap and they heat up

I have to confess 😬 it’s a mainstay of my cold weather winter camping ( which I ain’t done for 3 years )
It just gives a nice boost 👍

we'll be discussing the merits of adjustable zimmer frames next.
cold at night ? get a better sleeping bag/mat/fleecy liner.

Well in fairness my sleeping bag has a comfort rating of minus 5 (-5) and it was not that cold so yes definitley will invest in a better sleeping bag if camping this early in the season again but for a small investment it is going in my pannier for all future trips - just in case.

My adjustable zimmer is on back order!

If you use a Sigg, Nalgene or similar bottle, in a sock or two, you can use the water to make tea in the morning without the rubbery taste

is this not the point of the GF or partner?
Fuck that , I feel too constricted on my own in a sleeping bag never mind having another bod in it .
Do your humping before you settle down for the night .

If your sleeping bag seems to have lost it’s warmth check that the filling hasn’t clumped up and leaving you with cold spots this can happen if you store it in its stuff sack .

If you need a hot water bottle then you don’t have a warm enough sleeping bag to start with.

My down sleeping bag (cheap Aldi) is kept hanging up in the wardrobe.

When I washed my down jacket I put it in the dryer with some tennis balls (bought for the purpose) they knocked the clumps out. Could try that.

The advice from all manufacturers, is NOT to store a sleeping bag in its stuff sack, as it crushes and clumps the fibres.
