2 hours by motorway south of Santander but some great non-motorway routes if you have more time. My favourite would be via Vega de Pas. An easier route is the N629/BU552 combo. Ideal first or last stop if your ferry gives you a chance of a short ride before arrival or departure in the Basque/Cantabrian mountains.

As the name suggests, the hotel is a former convent. A nice standard of hotel but evening meals are only snacks, mostly cold platters. No problem, you are close to the old town and a number of bars and restaurants this side of the river. Even more choice if you wander across the bridge to the new town.

The building is in it's own grounds, sharing a drive with the college next door. Parking is outdoors on the terrace outside the main door. Separate car park for larger vehicles.

Stayed a few times . Must have changed as evening meal used to be a set menu

Was this not where we stayed the very first year? I think we got in very last minute for about €50? That would have been 2016! Jesus! Time flies.

it was closed for a while and only reopened a few months ago with new owners under the El Convento 1880 name.

it would be nice if they offered a better evening meal choice but maybe there isn't enough demand.

the food here was excellent https://www.gastromiranda.es/restaurantes/la-higuera/ - tapas. All tables had been reserved and the area outside was very busy with people sitting alongside the river. They give you a pager if you have ordered hot food so you can mill about outside with a drink until it is ready. It is marked on Google as temporarily closed so maybe seasonal or taking a holiday.
