Hotel room tax

Cochem must be the lowest of the low as I can't recall paying it.

You clearly never look at your hotel room receipt. If they charge you (which they almost always do, I am yet to stay in the hotel that doesn't charge it) they have to state the value per person, per night. On your receipt it would be called "City Tax".

It is a bit like environmental charge at the dealers whenever they service your bike, change tyres etc.
It is essentially waste management fee (council tax?), which hotel does pass on to you. At least that is my understanding.

it's coming in Scotland

in some places, especially Austria, in exchange for paying the local tourist tax you get a card that gives you discounts. In Carinthia, this got you over the Nockalmstrasse for free and gave you free bus travel
True. Where we stayed in Austria in June, we each received a pass, to travel on local public transport FOC, as well as some local tourist attractions. I was rather surprised by that.

Ten euro tax to leave Ireland. If ever there was a tax on enjoying yourself for two days and boosting the west of Ireland’s economy, that was it!

I’m outraged…. Incandescent with fury!

I just had 4 nights in Cologne and never had to pay anything extra.

It was a great hotel with breakfast and just a few stops from Milan, with the tax, still brilliant value and far better than you can get in the UK for your buck.

Just had 1 night in Italy and it was 5 euro's.

Probably more helpful if you gave the name of the hotel and / or its website.

It's their way of getting back at the English, old chap.....😁

It’s a local tax addedto each nights stay in a hotel . It’s usually a small charge, about a couple of euros per night.
It may be a small charge at the moment but I see it as the start of something bigger. Or am I just being cynical? 🤔
