By the way, how are you travelling about in NZ ? we are planning 2-3 weeks there next March, flying to Sydney to see eldest son then flying to NZ, thinking car hire and motels, had looked at hiring a motorhome but £5k is taking the piss.

======

I have started you a fresh thread, so as not to derail the SIM card quest.

Car hire is the best, very little train or bus services except for the major towns. Plenty of holiday parks (not like Butlins !) such as Top 10 or Tasman. Don't know where you're planning on going but the ferries from the North Island to the South are expensive but can get various discounts.
If I was coming over, I would go straight to the S.I - land in Christchurch. Far better road and great places to see. I live in the North Island and for touring I always go south. Avoid Auckland - its a dump, but easy to get out into real NZ within a couple of hours.

My wife and I did NZ last year, fantastic place lovely people and some wonderful sites to see, we did ours with Trailfinders fly drive. Flew into Auckland two days to acclimatise them then two weeks in the north island, ferry across to Picton then two weeks in South Island. There appears to be plenty of of accommodation but due to bad weather on one leg we had to reroute to catch with our schedule at that point everywhere we tried was full so suggest you plan and book some days in advance. Good luck and enjoy

I went there for the maximum allowed of six months (lucky me). I shipped my own bike over there and the wife and I travelled all over both islands.

I fell in love with the place and would move their if I could - to Reefton in the South Island :cool:

I hired a cheap old car while I was waiting for Customs clearance for my bike and the WOF.

As robbo said the holiday parks are plentiful and good.

Biggest hazard are the Chinese drivers !!!

Car hire was cheap when we went to the south island in 2018, it was dearer to hire just the camper van alone than hire a car, stay in a motel or air b&b and pay for your meals out and fuel. We hired our car online from by the airport somewhere and they did a shuttle bus service to the airport. As above watch out for the chinky drivers, one common fault is they revert to driving on the right after crossing single track bridges and hit you head on. Lovely place, like Britain used to be, just a pity it's so far away. Enjoy

You should have a cheap holiday here in NZ, the exchange rate for GBP to NZD its probably the best its ever been. Great for you, crap for me if I want a trip back
