...IS your GS???

Someone mentioned their perfect GS the other day...I think it was Den who just posted...'mine'.......

Was thinking about this as I rode around London today (i know, i'm sad like that :( ) and I reckon I'm fairly close to making mine as perfect as i can...for me.

Done......(from the front just as a place to start)

Tyres......Anakees...(not by choice but by availability....TKC80's as a trial next but still very happy with anakees)...sorted

Bars.....Nippy Normans raisers, way better ..comfy, no arm ache, sorted.....

Lights..FF50's, Ring Supewrbright LED, Rob FArmer switch...sorted

Screen.....OEM ADV, tobinated, perfect position for me found....sorted

Front shock...OEM.....either my riding's not good enough to need more, or i don't know the differewnce, but it works and i'm happy with it....sorted.

Engine.....nearly worn in now, 13k miles in 6 months, no longer using oil....sorted......

Engine bars....OEM.......best looking and good protection...sorted....

GPS....SPIII, good enough for what i need ...sorted

Alarm....Datatool 3 ....bloody good...sorted.

Tank.....OEM ADV large......and in the right colour ;) sorted

Front pegs....Declined lowering kit as dont want to lose GC....acceptable compromise....

Fuel lines...sorted....

Seat...OEM ADV, alaskan buttpad.....800 miles NP...sorted...

Rear pegs...need lowering for Dani...not yet sorted.....

Vern's panniers.....(loaner set as new silver full sized both sides silver ones coming very soon hiuh Vern? ;))....soon to be sorted...

Remus Y piece, Revolution can, baffle out.......Sounds nice, power up, sorted...

'Zorst lowering kit........on order from Motorworks so I can fit full sized LH pannier.....nearly sorted......

GIVI V42 box with top plate etc....silver cover....looks spot on on top of a silver ADV...sorted.....

Warrenty issues....RID clock with pixies in it ....replaced FOC..sorted.....

Engine bar cracked...replaced FOC.....sorted....

Outstanding.....

Pillion lowering kit for comfy happy Dani carrying.....

Techlusion chip & K&N filter.......to be done in conjunction with dyno run as I'm a bit worried about lean running with Remus and no baffle....

Migsel GPS mount to replace RAM mount on Hbars ..just tidying really...

Cosmetics......I'm going to finish it all off by changing the flashes on the tank from red to blue, and getting an upholsterer to change the red seat flanks for blue.......

Then , ladies and gents, I will have the most perfect GS in the world

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

So how close are you to yours....what do you regret or want??

(and I'm talking real world rather than HPN fantasies  :D )

Bill

WP rear shock with fat boy spring 2nd hand - very good

tobinater

MiGSel mounted SPIII

Bill Mayer saddle (THE BEST BUY OF ALL)

Wunderlich oil cap - crap going in the bin

Tank cover/bag - very good but not me- sold

TTech Bar raisers second hand - very good

pelican 1450 topbox on zega mount I like it

ttech zega cases not Verns but good enough for me (now with more aerodynamic leading edges)

one of those "Rob Farmer, MiGSel and the man behind the settee" light kits still in box next to my desk - psyching myself up for a foray into the world of electrics.

Tourance tyres - more squirrely than Hyde Park - when they wear out it´ll be TKCs or Anakees. Pending tests to make sure there isnt something else wong with the bike. 1st set on this bike very good, second iffy, third awful.

TTech headlight gaurd looks almost as hard as the hard part that is also fitted.

standard exhaust and cat - probably wont change it.

Scraped cylinder heads - lovely - when they are really knackered mightbuy some Stanton ones (bit pricey though)

Secondhand front wheel non adv - the bike is now starting to have a characterful look about it! The bent knackered "unrebuildable" original wheel is going to Haans to be made a 21inch wheel. so will then need a telescopic strut thingy probably. Maybe I´ll buy a plastic tank as well. Or maybe not.

Will be buying some Ricky bars when available.

Then I suppose I´ll just flog it to death for a few years and buy a KTM cos you dont have to do all this bloody nonsense in the first place (apart from getting another Bill Mayer seat).

Bloody hell, here goes....

2004 Adv.

BM Bits;

Black 32 litre tank ( minus the yellow flashes and the sliver GS logos),

Black engine (shame you can't specify the black shaft like on the Rockster etc.),

Black OE seat (I find it ok),

Engine bars (can't vouch for thier effectiveness but I think they look the best),

ABS/Servo brakes,

Heated grips,

Alarm/immobiliser,

Nav II.

Touratech (most of the catalogue:D ),

41 litre Zega Sondersystem plus inner bags (now mainly black, Uncle Albert take a bow:thumb )

Oil cooler guard (black),

Fog lamps (shields now anodised black),

Xenon main beam unit,

Upper fork leg protectors,

Handshield extenders,

Locking oil filler (keyed to match Zega locks),

Exhaust foot shields,

Extended bash plate (anodised black, so is the OE item now!),

Carbon rear brake switch guard,

Crud catcher blanking plate,

Extended rear mudflap,

Adv extended rear carrier (anodised black),

Side panels.

Polycarbon headlamp protector (looks nice but as reported elsewhere, it just reflects the light backwards so ditched it in favour of below).

Wunderlich;

Throttle cruise jobbie,

Air temp gauge.

(To come, tank protector and knee pads).

Others;

Ohlins.

Al Jesse top box mount (plate fitted to the opening and TT extended carrier fitted on the top).

Visor sponge holder (home-made).

Tobinators.

Job issue reflex reflective red tape on the rear of the Zegas.

Ram camera mount.

Migsel Satnav mount (brilliant),

Stebel Nautilus horn.

Headlamp protector (not sure of the make, got it 2nd-hand on this site).

To Do;

Ex-job hi-intensity rear reds to use as rear fogs (got them, just not yet fitted)

Matt black GS tank logos from the primer Adv.

Wunderlich side prop extended foot.

Ceebaileys dark tint Adv screen, standard size (on it's way from the States)

Tyres;

Metz Tourances (came fitted and I do like them. Like Fanum I'm going to try TKC80's soon just to see!).

Wish list;

I wish I could improve the OE dip beam without more lights and still keep the HID main beam.

I'm going to be living from this bike for 6-8 months next year and possibly longer the year after so I need to get it just how I want it before setting off.

buggeration how much does you bike weigh?

I forgot Reyno oil cooler grill and Kidala bashplate

Not much more than standard.

Glad you didn't ask how much it cost though:D

2004 GS1150
ABS.............good
Servo.........crap
Heated Grips...........great
Sunny Yellow...............it grows on you........but the last red one was better
Black engine............a bitch to keep clean and shiny
Cat.........saves the planet
Handguards.............keep some of the rain off my mitts

Modifications :-
Ohlins (rear with stiffer 160nM spring)..........superb

Corbin seat............the best buy ever.........transforms the bike (stock seats suck)

MRA screen............the business and cures buffeting for me

Baglux cover..........protects the tank and allows me to use my most important navigation aid .............a map

Touratech centre stand plate........strong and durable

Fender extender and mudflap...........keeps the engine cleaner

Wunderlich Foot flaps.........keep the shit off my boots.......but touch down too easily when cornering and wear away

Touratech side panels..............tidy up the look of the bike

Wunderlich Oil cap.............does the job

Touratech Rack Bag..............superb, a brilliant bit of kit

Touratech Rack............gives a bit more surface area

Touratech number plate flap.............stops the shit covering the rear.......simple and effective

Sebring Can............makes a better 'burble' and saves weight

BMW Panniers ............with Global lids.........all you could want for a trip away, plus light and easy to remove..........best pannier option........ IMHO

Tourance tyres.............the only option for me

That's it............

2003 1150 GS

Blue & White - Tarts colour but who cares?

ABS - If it only kicks in once than its done its job!

Heated grips - only for wimps, but at least this wimp has warm hands.

Touratech HandGuard Extensions - Help keep the rain of your hands....do they?

Wunderlich Fender Extenda - Helps stops some crap from going up the front of the engine?

Remus Y-Piece - some much better with this fitted.

Remus Revolution - some much more noise, who cares if its makes it faster or not?

GSA Screen - Personnally, this is fime for me, no buffeting or excessive wind noise.

GSA Beak - Only fitted it coz I dropped something on the mudguard and damaged the paintwork while fitting the oil cooler grill....tosser that I am!

50% Brighter Bulbs fitted in headlight - Better to be seen than to see with, cheap and quick fix.

Touratech Headlight Protector - great during day, must remove it at night otherwise you dazzle yourself!!

FF50 Fogs Lights- wired in via Robs switch on dip beam, excellant.

FF50 Driving lights - wired in via the main beam, most excellant.

MiGSel bar - Quality.

50% Brighter Bulbs fitted to all FF lights - well worth the effort if fitting, makes a good light even better IMHO

Reyno Grill - helps save damage to the oil cooler, beautifully made.

Touratech Main Stand Guard - Stops the shite hitting the Y-Piece.

SPIII - Don't know how I ever managed without it now?

Touratech Lockable SPIII Mount - Piece of mind for petrol stations.

Wunderlich Mudflaps - How much crap do these stop?

Touratech Oil Filler Cap - Piece of mind again.

Tourance Tyres - just swapped over from the T66 tyres, early day yet. That said thet ARE better that the T66's!!!

BMW Panniers - OK small. but ok for weekend trips.

Givi E52 box c/w extra brake lights - just like havin' a small garden shed behind you. Massive, can fit all sorts of shite in there!

Tourteach Tank Bag - Very well made and well worth the money. Down side is that it hits the SPIII when on a full lock.

Wunderlich Handle Bar Risers - Another cheap and quick fix, improves the riding position.

Must Get List.

Crash Bars - But still cannot decide on which ones?
The Wunderlich ones seem to be my favourite to be honest.

1998 1100 GS

Running TKC80 tyres all the time for stability on tracks.

TT original front guard copy for more clearance between the front tyre and guard for mud (it’s smaller).

Sigma pushbike speedometer for accuracy and all the wonderful things it tells me about my average speeds.

Tyre Pliers Bead breaker permanently attached to the handlebars.

TT 41 Lt tank

TT tank bag permanently carrying a first aid kit and a complete puncture and tyre repair kit. Also longer tyre levers, complete set of cables, tow rope which also doubles as a tyre compressor to aid in re-seating the tyre when re-fitting, liquid steel for repairs, army bottle of water and the most important bit a 75x75mm aluminium plate for the side stand when parked in sand. Numerous other things as well but these are pretty much permanent bits before the other stuff goes in.

1150 hand guards so that the bike skis when it falls, instead of digging into the dirt.

Still running stock suspension which is starting to feel a bit tired but still works wonderfully, especially when one considers that Öhlins front and rear would set me back close to $3,000 and the gain with speed limits in this country and the state of the roads makes it not worth it.

TT pull apart crash bars, great for servicing the bike, also the TT centre stand guard has got one really largish scrape from the front of the engine continuing on through the centre stand guard which was from a huge hole and rock on a bad road.

TT Zega 41L panniers each side using the special TT close mount system. This meant I required a low pipe, I run the Staintune lower pipe.

TT rear mud deflector, helps to keep the pillion reasonably clean.

The rear rack has a home built plywood extended rack. I run a nice T one for when two up and a nifty rectangular one which does away with the rear grab rail for running solo. This allows me to run an Ortlieb bag lengthways so that I have maximum luggage capacity with no panniers for a weekend in the bush running light.

TT indicators fore and aft, the originals just snap as soon as you look at the falling off, especially the front ones.

Plastic throttle rocker on the twist grip means one just leans the hand on the grip and you can hold the throttle steady without having to strain your fingers. Really good on a two week trip especially now that I have arthritis happening in the right hand.

TT oil lock keyed to the Zega pannier locks. However I haven’t after some years gotten around to adding the locks to the panniers.

I bought a spare rear wheel, complete with disc and ABS ring for ease of changing to a road rear tyre for quick longish road trips. The idea is to have it fitted with a road tyre, however, since purchasing a tyre changing machine I currently have it fitted with a spare TKC80 tyre for changeover in two weeks when I come back from a trip that will wear out the rear new TKC80 on at the moment.

Heated grips and ABS are also fitted.

There are lots of other little things but it is pretty much a perfect touring bike. In fact I consider it to be the best touring bike as it now is, that I’ve ever had the pleasure owning.

Mick.

When i aquired my Black 97 1100 it was the cleanest GS i'd seen this side of a showroom it had at the time,

A one off exhuast system , B*W engine bars a yellow seat and IMO tacky graphics.

The seat was re-covered black (twice, first cover streched) and the graphics were given the hairdryer treatment.

I fitted my Non-Fango top box, and a Bagster tank cover (since flung in the corner of the garage)

I re-painted the cylinder head covers black (after a minor spill) with contrasting silver spark plug covers :P cuase I think it looks good.

Replaced the front Conti with a Tourance to match the rear

Ive dumped the ABS, so along with my light weight pipe it now weighs about the same as a 1200 :D

I bought a "chip" from a German chap via eBay which has made the bike run much smoother and actually quieter, it also appears to have improved the fuel consumption. I also did the "Motomartin" air snorkle modification.

Ive a bicycle computer/speedo fitted so I know how fast Im really going along.

I fitted a pair of cheap (£12) n f'in loud horns on a home made bracket inside the headstock

A pair of Hella spots (sat in the garage needing fitted)

I bought a pair of BMW panniers, and a magnetic double tier tank bag. Which along with my topbox is plenty of luggage space for me.

Ive a TT screen extender which I got FOC (cheers you know who you are :D )

And Ive just bought a S/H pair of 1150 hand guards

Future modifications will be

The O/E seat in favour of a Corbin/Mayer or Sargent
Screen replaced with a MRA Vario
And replace the O/E Bars (Rickys/Renthals)

Ive found the GS is one of those bikes that grow on you the more miles you do, and modifications made are all part of "personalizing" the bike to your own tastes and needs.

Hmmmmmm.....?

1. mortgage nearly paid off
2. 1100 bike pretty standard but with all the right bits -abs grips etc

thats my preference of importance.

Extra spot Lights
Ohlin shocks
carbon can
hard part
Pair of "K" series horns
MRA Vario tinted screen
Stainless steel nuts, bolts, screws all over.

TT telelever guard
TT Rear Alu Rack
TT Pannier frames with zega 36 + 41lt boxes
Bevel Breather
GPS V on TT bracket
Different Speedo Drive to corect 6% error reading(It is still 2% out:rolleyes: )
TT Seat although I run std front and Wundelich rear when Michelle is with.
Handlebars welded to move GPS bracket into better view - thanks Vern still owe ya peanuts and beer:beerjug:
Remus can sold for Laser can and now back on Standard can.
ABS + Heated grips
Rob's Motoswitch, one day I will get around fitting the freakin spots :)
Tourances all round and would like to get another set of wheels for TKC's

I was thinking of a bigger tank but managed to sqeeze 256 miles out of my tank tonight before I decided to rather fill up than push the beast around. If it was Africa or OZ maybe worth it but reckon in Europe no real need unless you a big mile nutcase.

Still on original shocks but they are on their way out on 50k miles. Don't know if I should get OEM, WP or Ohlins. So much money for little springy things:confused:

Would like to respray from red to white and invest in a TT bag with side sacks.
Besides that it goes fine and some times wonder why I even contemplate buying a new one when the lemon can still treat me on nice rides for a long time.

Ohh yes and I have that rear mud flap as well

Not spent a £ this year...

apart from service and a set of Tourances..so I think I'm happy:D

But here's what I managed to put on between October and December last year.

CeeBaileys +7+4 Screen.

Tobinators.

H&B 50l topbox.

Baglux Tankcover and Athena Tankbag.

Migsels Light Bar.

Hella 500's.

Migsels Rad Grill.

Robs light switch.

Alaskan Butt Pad.

Garmin Vista.

Wunderlich side stand plate.

At some point I know I'll need a set of panniers, but I think they make the bike look like a bloody Luton van:eek:, and as I intend to get in more off road miles a TT hardpart will be going on shortly, apart from that I love it just the way it is, the perfect yobs bike:cool:

2000 1150GS

black metallic paint, like solid black only faster.

hard part.

H & B crash bars.

migsel oil cooler guard now stealth black.

melvyn seat, re-melvyn'd so it's to my spec.

reyno rack extension so i can bungee on more than one fag packet.

catechtomy with std. can.

a few s/s bolts fitted where the std. cheese/chocolate ally ones are really stuffed.

std. ohlins front shock + custom valved rear with 160Nm lard arse spring (recent additions, still undergoing testing & evaluation. initial impressions very encouraging)

fender extender fitted after spending ages chipping baked on irish horse shit off the engine & exhaust earlier in the year.

TT headlight guard mounted on cut down spacers enabling the perspex guard to sit closer to lamps & tuck under the silver bit under screen, so's it don't throw light up onto screen at night hindering visibility. it also stops bike looking like a speccy twat.

tobinators.

wish list:

when i win the lottery (planned for next year) i'll definitely be fitting a set of ricky bars to replace the idiotically placed std. items.

1994 R100GS PD

WP rear shock

probably been fitted with progressive fork springs by PO as i find front end pretty much OK

wish list:

bigger front disc & associated fittings to mount calliper, in my quest to stop in the same county where i first apply brake.

that's a bit shorter than the oilhead isn't it? must have got more right at the factory :D
