How did they steal my GS

Can anyone tell me if some sort of black box exists that plugs into the ODBC port under the rh side panel to allow thieves to start the bike?

Had my R1250GS taken off my drive after they cut the chain. Self recovered from a local lock up thanks to an air tag fitted to it.

When I got it to it the battery had been disconnected so I connected back up again but ignition button was dead and it wouldn’t see the keys.

Recovered to the dealer and they sorta intimated they knew what thieves were doing but wouldn’t confirm or deny anything.

Side panel was ripped off to access the battery and plug maybe?
 
Usual M.O. is to snap the steering lock then push it away with another bike / surron.

If it's chavs, which it sounds like if you've found it locally.

If it was one of the organised gangs, it'd be abroad before you could say English Channel.
 
Yeah, seen a CCTV video a few years ago showing similar.

Bloke parks bike, applies steering lock and walks away. No alarm, disk lock, chain etc - stupidly lazy security taken.

Seconds later the scrotes arrive, kicks handlebars to break the steering lock, rips off the battery cover, fiddles about and seconds later the tail light illuminates and off he rides, too easy !

Probably an OBD port hack of some kind.

Yes, OBD port hacking is a thing if you know the right people.
Agreed , in the car world arnt they approaching the off side of certain cars, removing / ripping of the plastic mudguard above the front tyre, then plugging into an obd flying lead and Roberts your uncle.
 
Perhaps someone in the trade is not quite as straight as you'd like and either is in cahoots with said scrotes or passed on in go. (Happened 15-20 yrs ago with Audi RS4s and their trackers/removal/theft)

Yes but if the made the lock stronger the frame or headstock or triple clamp or something else would give. Everyone recommends having multiple layers of theft protection. Steering lock doesn’t even come close. JJH

Homologation / type approval requirements ?

Of course they know there as useful as windows in a submarine , but because they have to fit it, fit it they will

I never put my steering lock on.
It’s not a deterrent and if your bike is recovered replacing the damaged parts can add a considerable amount to the bill, and on a few of the bikes I’ve had in for insurance estimates has caused the bike to be written off.

On some Toyota you could access the CAN/LIN via the headlight sub loom, hence front right arch liners ripped out and straight into the vehicles brains via the sub loom plug.
 
A physical lock that prevented the stand retracting would make most bikes a bugger to steal. Mainstand ideally, sidestand, well, when the scrote caught it in a grid, it would be amusing to watch.

Cheap too, if designed in. Probably more expensive as an aftermarket fitment.

Something else to cut off with a battery grinder... but I guess the more grinding they have to do... the less likely they are to steal it.

A mate of mine used to work as a security consultant on big ships going through "pirate alley" off of Africa... his plan was always to make his ship look harder to board/capture than the other ones... maybe that should be our approach ?

I agree they're a waste of time and potentially cause more damage. Other locks and chains are far more effective. Trouble is, they cost money and if I've spent £25,000 on my shiny GS, why should I bother spending a couple of hundred securing it. And it takes ages to lock and unlock those chains. (Tongue firmly in cheek).
