How did they steal my GS

I and a few others know a GSer (no longer a member of the forum) who had his bike stolen. I knew him quite well, in fact I’ve been riding in Morocco with him.

He found out who’d stolen it and where the bike was stashed
He informed the police and for whatever reason they said they weren’t interested .. He was abroad at the time.
He flew back, went straight to the scrotes address, reclaimed his bike, and put the scrote in hospital.
Indeed, so severe were the scrotes injuries that our dear friend ended up in prison for a short stay.,

:D
And the scrote collected Criminal Injuries compensation? Its all wrong.

So, good input lads and lasses but getting to my original post, does anyone know some solid facts about using the ODBC port to start the bike?

They do it in the same way for both bikes and cars.

This old article about relay theft also describes the OBD route:

“Steve Launchbury, a member of the vehicle crime and security division at Thatcham Research, a risk intelligence organisation funded by the UK’s insurance industry, explained that by connecting directly to the can bus, the device doesn’t need the key fob to be present or its signal relayed to open and start the vehicle. The device itself contains all of the data necessary to control the car.”

Reading that makes a good case for an old fashioned key based car. 👍

Had a car stolen this way in 2016.

They broke the drivers window without setting off the alarm. Reached in the car under the akarm sensor which was at roof level. A minute later the indicators flashed , four of them got in off it went.

Neighbour was up in the night getting glass of water in kitchen and witnessed all this.

I was in an apartment so they wouldn't have been scanning my key etc as wouldn't have known where. It was on my bedside table.

Car was not keyless it had remote lockings and the key fob went in a slot in the dashboard to start by pushing so not a twist key.

The car ended up about 3 miles away, parts were on ebay/gumtree 24 hours later i spotted the ads.

The guys selling parts (all from the asian community) were arrested trying to sell a door for my car, they had another audi on their drive stolen same night that was minus its dashboard. They reckoned they were bought from birmingham. Hmmm yeah 100 mikes away and brought 3 mikes from where stolen 24 hours later.

Went to crown court, 2 of the ebay/guntree ones got off and the other 1 who had the two cars at his address got a suspended sentence (piss take). Whoever stole the car if its wasn't these 3 (who these lot obviously knew) never caught, this was for handling stolen goods.

Justice system a joke, not the polices fault, but you can see why they largely dont bother, a waste of manpower.

Surprised its still going on as i know audi tightened it up and i put a tracker on my next one.

The Yamaha MT series of bikes £27 OBD reader (Allegedly)of EBay UK and their off with your trusty steed in 2 minutes.
I have wired in secret switch that starves the coil packs of 12vpower.
I guess they have to pick the bike up?

Ghost imobilsers are very good on cars and I believe do prevent this type of theft
Not sure they are available on bikes but if not they should be

Thanks all, it seems to me that the Cymarc thing is worth looking at, and BMW (and every other bike manufacturer) should fit them as standard.
I have this mod on my 1250 and it works well and easy to lock. If anything itll slow down the determined thief.
