How difficult is Windows 8

I bit the bullet a month ago upgrading from XP Pro 32bit to 8.1 Pro 64bit. I did this as part of a hardware update. Classic Shell brings back the start menu which, for me anyway, is preferable.

I have had a few problems with Thunderbird (only officially available in 32bit) freezing randomly. I have set this to start in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode which has improved things considerably, still an occasional minor, momentary, freeze. Other 32 bit applications seem fine so far without any adjustment. As part of the process new licences for 64bit applications were purchased or downloaded where the vendor supported the option to swap FOC.

I terms of familiarity in use, compared to XP, the combination of Windows 8.1 and Classic Shell make it a non issue as far as I'm concerned. There were a few little aspects, which coming from XP, took a while to find out how they worked. Minimising everything and showing the desktop was one such point. Google is your friend here and should easily find answers to any such questions.

If you are using 8.1 (and you really should be by now :) ) You can just right click on the taskbar, go to properties, click the "navigation" tab and then put a checkbox in the "When I sign in blah blah blah" in the screenshot

No more metro, unless you want it.

Mmmmm.....'64 Dodge Polara. :D

We Have had Windows XP for a few years and our computer is getting extremely slow, we even have to regularly re-boot as it crashes often. I am told XP has had so many updates, this is bound to happen so should change to Windows 8.1. However our computer may not be up to taking it so my questions -

1. Should I struggle with it until Window 9 comes out next year?

2. Should I try to install Windows 8.1?

3. She we just junk it, and get a new computer which will take Windows 8.1?

4. Should we consider Apple which we understand is completely different altogether?

Thanks.

Sorry but my eyes glazed over the instant I began to read that.

you have another option, windows 7 almost everything that runs xp will run 7 I just picked up the ultimate version for under £50 from Amazon.

If you care to post Processor/RAM/video card and the rest etc, can give you an idea if 8.1 will run, although if you have fairly run of the mill spec then it will run, its only odd bits that cause problems, some printers/scanners

Oh dear. In that case I'd suggest option 3 "just junk it, and get a new computer which will take Windows 8.1"

During the junking process, for data privacy, hammer a screwdriver through the hard drive platters.
