Young Miss Masters is spending too much time chatting to her mates using MSN Messenger (in an XP(HE) environment) when she should be doing her homework.

How do I block access to her chatroom?

Greg

Is that the daughter or the wife when she should be doing the housework?

Take the fuse out of the pc plug* and make her write her homework out longhand.............

*which will work until she tries another power lead.

So make her do her homework on the dining room table :D

I actually pulled the plug out of my wireless router - it had the desired affect - but there was also a very nasty side-effect, it stopped ME from getting onto the net!!

:(

MSN Messenger communicates with the .NET Messenger service using either port 1863 for direct TCP connections or using HTTP using port 80. Network administrators can disable access to the .NET Messenger Services through their firewall:

1) Block outbound access to TCP port 1863.

2) Block HTTP access to messenger.hotmail.com.

3) Block HTTP access to webmessenger.msn.com if you also want to block access to MSN Web Messenger.

So open up your firewall and have a poke around...job done ;)

Use her account on MSN and send all her mates messages that she no longer needs them as friends as she's found some other much better friends to hang around with.

Hmmm - little Madam Masters appears to be like Madams 1 and 2 here. We didn't worry too much about the chatting - they dip into the chatroom as they go about their homework.

The main problem we have had is the virus infection from their mates even though we are fully Norton'd.

As long as it's only PC virus's they bring home you're OK :eyebrow

And every one knows that Norton is Cr@p.

Join the same chatroom using your own computer. Then go on line when she is on.
That will soon piss her off.

I suspect it's not actually a chatroom.....MSN messenger is actually an instant messaging service rather than a full blown chatroom.......so you carry on usung the PC whilst effectively sending unlimitd free texts through the IM client.

So unfortunatly, loging intot he same chatroon doesn't apply.

Every minute on MSN = an hour less skiing that should work:D

That ought to get some leverage, but you know what kids are like, the here-and-now is always worth loads more that the there-and-then!

How to disable MSN and get your family back:-

You have to get down and dirty with the 'regedit' tool. This recipe shows you how.

Be careful...you'll probably get kneecapped if she finds out who did it.

(And don't you go blaming me, either!)

If you are happy to stop all use of Messemger then you can use XP Antispy to remove it (saves the horrors of regedit).

This is quite a nice little tool for stopping MS receiving information from your computer.
I have been running it on a number of machines since XP was released with no problems.

You can get it here
