Just bought a new hard disc for my desktop after original failed. I've got the XP reinstallation disc from my Dell laptop - will it work on my non-Dell desktop?
Apart from the XP disc I've also got a disc, again from the Dell, which contains device drivers and diagnostics - will this also work on my non-Dell machine?

Any advice for an IT numpty would be so very gratefully received :thumb

I would say that if its to replace the original master drive and you have no secondary drive it should be a breeze and it will work in any compatible machine. Just check the jumpers on the back match those with the drive you are taking out. The jumpers and the little bits od plastic, probably 2 that just flick on and off with a small screwdriver or similar implement.

To reinstall windows just load from boot as normal.

It may do - depends if Dell changed the XP install disc in any way to fit their own requirements. Does it look like a MS install disc and have the XP install key - 20 characters IIRC?

Dell diagnostics and drivers will be specific to your Dell laptop so won't work on a non-Dell desktop. Most drivers should be freely available from OEM websites.

It sould work, after the final XP install, it will prompt you to re-enter the 20 digit authentication key and call the nice people at MS to get the activation key,( best to call from a mobile and they will txt you the number, saves writing it down) then its just a simple case of finding all the drivers and installing them sperately.

Thats my experience of the install discs, and ive used the same dell disc for 5 different machines.

Thanks for the advice - I'll give it a try over the next few days
