I need some kind person to tell me how I can unlock my panniers without a key. They are from my 1200 GS which was stolen over Easter and I forgot to unlock all the locks before sending the keys to the insurers. I did find the earlier thread relating to this but seemingly the info I need has been deleted...!

I need to open them so I can sell them as they will not fit on the 800GS I have bought as a replacement. My dealer has kindly offered to do it for me but it would be easier if I could unlock them myself.#

Thanks

P

one of our crooks at the office was pretty good at shaping keys from toothbrushes....

all you need is the rough shape of the key, heat the blank (toothbrush) in some boiling water and squeeze it into the lock leave it to set and then twist to open...

worked on Zargee cases in the old days...

or just hit with hammer like you mean it....:thumb2

If you know somebody with the same panniers his key may unlock yours i unlocked a mates ali topbox, i was surpprised how easy it was.

From memory, the luggage locks only use three of the five(?) wafers inside the barrel, so there are actually only a few "different" key variations. As a result, it is not that unusual to find that your key will indeed unlock the luggage on a different bike. It may be that the dealer simply has a full set of such keys.

Doesn't help much with the original enquiry though - Sorry.

I've found that regardless of age or type, i've managed to open any bmw luggage with a large bent paperclip with the end flattened.

I think that would depend on who coded the locks originally. If all the wafers are in place then I think they would all have to line up on the key.

The locks are held in place by a spring loaded "tab" at the back of the cylinder, if you can get at that and depress it the cylinder pops out and Bob's your uncle!

I keyed my own and goofed up the order of things on one of them and had to "pop" it off...granted the latches were open at the time. Not sure it can be done with them latched.

Hard to explain...look at this picture:

The tab you need to depress is the silver thing sticking out slightly from the lock cylinder - farthest from the key.

A screwdriver instead of the key might work if you don't care about the locks...

I need some kind person to tell me how I can unlock SOMEONE ELSE'S panniers without a key. They are from A 1200 GS which I HAVE MY EYE ON... THE OWNER INCONSIDERATELY forgot to unlock all the locks before LEAVING THE BIKE. I did find the earlier thread relating to this but seemingly the info I need has been deleted...!

I need to open them so I can NICK AND sell them as they will not fit on the 800GS I have bought as a replacement. My dealer has kindly offered to do it for me but it would be easier if I could unlock them myself.#
