I've just been offered a factory restricted F650GS. I dont want it restricted. Is it possible to de-restrict it, and if so how is it done. Im in 2 minds as to whether to get it or not because I'm told that unrestricting a factory restricted F650GS is VERY (HIS WORDS NOT MINE!!) time consuming expensive and very labour intensive...... does anyone know anything about this subject and if they do any idea on what parts i will need, costs involved and work involved. By the way I am talking about an F650 TWIN not a single (yes i know its posted in the right bit but sometimes people get some funny ideas)so just thought i'd clear that up.....

I assume your talking about the 33BHP restriction!
I would have thought not much to do or money as when you buy them new there is a zero extra charge. (maybe call a main dealer for confirmation) :D

SWMBO bought a 2nd hand F650GS (Twin) and the dealer said they would restrict it for her for free as she is on a restricted licence..

When we collected it, we were given a box with throttle bodies and some other nuts and bolts in it. We were told that these are the standard parts, so when it comes time to take the restriction off these would be needed and a ECU remap.

Not really looked into the de-restricting as that is about 18 months away.

From the disc of all knowledge -

Remove seat, battery, panels and air intake silencer... and injection line and old throttle-valve stub assembly. Replace with new one and reverse instructions.

I'd give it a two out of five Haynes spanners difficulty - looks thoroughly do-able. Of note it does require new accelerator cable too. There's a reducing kit on realoem but cant see the upgrading kit... so a call to the dealer perhaps.

If there's some fancy pants with a bit more technical wizardry than i they'll show you the picture of the part that needs swapping out...

Best of luck,

S

De restricting is mechanically speaking quite simple. It is fiddly ( re attaching the rubbers to the throttle bodies ) and not cheap as you have to buy a few bits.

Keep the bits you take off but as I have found - nobody seems to want them ...

;)

Check with your local dealer. I've just bought a 650GS twin and had it restrited free of charge. Informed that to have it removed when required was also free :thumb
