how do you check your engine oil

i have always checked my oil on my jap bike cold
so what difference doe's hot or cold make
where should oil be when cold on 1200gs

Oil should be inside the engine. Best way to check is have a look in the sight glass, with the bike is on its centrestand, about ten minutes after you've ridden it. Just over half full is OK (optimist) or half empty (pessimist).

One of those ever returning questions ...

warm bike after ride - on side stand for 5-10 minutes - then on centre stand -oil should be between centre of dot in sight glass and upper circle
