My 1100 has now done 43K miles and as far as I know is on the original shocks still. I've seen various comments saying they usually wear out well before that. Could be my imagination but it seems to behave differently on bumpy roads to how it used to. How do you check the shocks are working OK?

I'd imagine that at 43K miles your shocks are well goosed. Time to consult your financial adviser and consider the options. Just over a £1K for a pair of Ohlins, ISTR.

Normally the damping that goes. leaving you dependent on the springs, leading to a pogo stick feeling. The bike will generally bounce more than normal after hitting a sizeble bump & then take longer to settle down.

Thanks for the replies. Yes - a pogo stick seems to sum up the ride these days. I tried bouncing the thing up and down when it was stationary but didn't get the same response as with my old cars when they just carried on bouncing after you jumped off the wing!

£1K - bloomin' heck  That's probably 1/3 of the price of the whole bike now. I hope I'll be able to corner like Rossi if I spend that much :D

Somebody like maxton will rebuild the shocks for you at a fraction of the cost of Ohlins.

They will set them up exactly to your weight and ridding style and will be a big improvement on the OE shocks when new :)

Value for money wise a much better investment than a 'gold' pair of shocks IMHO!

I contacted Maxtons but they said they weren't up for rebuilding the originals and instead offered new ones at around Ohlins prices. On the MicaPeak site it says the 1100 shocks aren't rebuildable, but perhaps BM fitted various types.

I'm a fairly tame rider and not worried about looks/names (wouldn't have a GS if I was :) ) so what are Ohlins going to give me compared to OE units? From threads I've read they seem to need rebuilding quite often - is that dependant on the hammering you give them or do the seals just age?

Chris

If you're on a budget you can get the standard shocks rebuilt at ABE - £100 per shock + £50 per shock if you need a new rod (I would think you only need a new rod if it's worn, scratched or bent). Turnaround is a week.
