How do you know what maps are on your zumo?

Today I downloaded the 2011 Europe maps from Garmin, I couldn't install all of it to the 550's internal memory but, after clearing out voices etc there was enough room for the Western Europe option to go on the internal memory and the everything was downloaded to the mac.

Now I have the rest of the maps on the Mac and went to install them to the SD card using mapinstall. However, when you run mapinstall it gives you a map of europe and you have to select each individual map from the sectors on the map itself, rather than the handy list used in the regular garmin online update software.

What I don't know is just where the boundaries on the maps in Western Europe lie and, obviously, I don't want to install what's already on the device. Any suggestions for figuring this out?

Many thanks,

Justin.

Good question. On the older units you used to be able to zoom out and see the loaded mapping tiles (thin grey lines), can't do that on my Nuvi 765, I assume the Zumo is the same.

With my StreetPilot none of the limited regions offered suited my purposes so I created my own primary mapping file and loaded that onto the unit. I did this in Mapsource and had the foresight to save this as a GDB file so I could open it in the future to check what regions I have on my GPS.

Garmin should publish on the web what countries the regions offered as part of the download cover. I've emailed Garmin UK support and asked them if this is possible and to provide a list in the meantime, I suggest that you do the same. I couldn't find any such resource out there, that doesn't mean to say that one doesn't exist though...

Don't bother with the internal memory. Clear it and stick all the maps on the SD card.

That's not a bad idea.

Just make sure that the mapping is properly/fully unlocked on your PC before writing it to the card.

City Nav map sets offered when downloading for a GPS with insufficient memory

I got a reply email from Garmin support with a pdf of the countries that are included within the region options presented by the map updater when you have insufficient memory for the complete City Nav Mapping product.

That's great, thanks for the help. Why they don't put that on the website somewhere I don't know.

Cheers,

Justin.

Out of interest, do you just delete the map files using your preferred file manager when the unit is plugged into the computer?

Would have thought that the mapping would be more secure on the internal memory.

Wonder what would happen if you put all the maps on the card anyway, would it totally confuse the zumo?
