Now that travel season is here I'm wondering how to lock up my bike when parked overnight. Do you use a big chain? Disk lock? Do you bring a bike cover to use as a deterrence?

I use an "Abus Granit" 'U' lock through the wheel and back axle even when the bike is in a locked garage. If I had to park it outside regularly I'd fit a ground anchor into concrete and put a chain through the frame and the ground anchor. But even the best of chains will only delay a determined thief, armed with a disk cutter .

Mine has the OE alarm and I bought an "Oxford Monster" lock and chain for £60 on ebaY (rrp £100+) - It came with a carrying pouch that will strap neatly to the pillion seat.
I live in the NE and use the lock and chain in the alarmed garage with a ground anchor and door-stopper.

Hind-sight and an empty garage are not funny!

Steering lock, alarm, locked garage in locked court yard.

But if they really want it, I suspect that they'll get it.

I assume you mean when out on your travels rather than at home?

In this case I use a U-lock that fits in the carrier under the seat on my GS12, allied to a flexible braided steel cable 'rope' (Kryptonite 'Flex Security') with loops at each end which allows me to lock the bike to an imovaable object/other bike. It's about 2.5m long and 2cm thick and being flexible it easily coils up into a pannier/top box and takes up surprisingly little room.

Before I had a garage I used to use one of these cables threaded through my bikes. I came down one morning to find three big cuts into the cable but the thieving scum had not managed to cut all the way through so have sworn by them since.

Oh, and at home the garage is alarmed, has a ground anchor, two heavy duty chains, a U-lock and the cable mentioned above.

At home the works as they used to say most bikes were nicked from home.

Out and about a disc lock or now a u-lock that goes under the seat. And park in a public well ovelooked location.

I keep a chain at work as well so it saves hauling one to the place I park most regularly (in the event I can be bothered to ride to work).

Im not sure the U-lock is a good security as my old Abus Disclock I used on the SV (which was a pretty tight package making it hard to get at) but it has the advantage you can attach it to a railing, attach two bikes together or even loop through someone elses chain if your feeling friendly.

For a toerag, this is a veritable shopping list for tools... :(

My advice is, don't tell people how you store your precious things, if you do want to do it, do it in a closed group.

I sincerely hope that your stuff gets left alone. :)

Im sure they are busy surfing here just to find out whats on my bike. Its much more likely they will just come prepared and have a look.
Paranoiac :D

I've just bought the Abus Granit X-Plus 54 which fits under the seat of the R1200GS, see http://www.nippynormans.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ABS-A22975&variation=&aitem=1&mitem=1

I park my 12 in an unlocked garage and leave the key in the ignition. I will lock the front forks (and remove the key!), remove the GPS and put it in the locked panniers if parking in a dubious area. Otherwise I just remove the key, leave the GPS in place and the panniers unlocked. In 42 years of riding and touring I have never had a theft problem with any of my bikes.
