How do you pick up a dropped GS

All,

I have heard various theories involving leverage, using leg muscles, turning the front wheel, not turning the front wheel, using the front brake etc.

Does anyone, and I sure that you do, have the definitive method for picking up a GS on its side?

:)

There is no difinitive way but the one that works for me is to turn the bars so the wheel is pointing to the sky, squat down, grab the bar that's on the ground and lift keeping your body up close to the bike so you have optimum control over balance.

Surprisingly easy when you get the knack :thumb2

Try to get the bike in gear before lifting.
handlebars full lock: upper bar rearwards, lower forwards.
Lift with legs not back - put thigh under bike ASAP to take weight - thereafter it's easy.

But most important - try to get help - I don't find it as easy as Pavey shows!

Good point Mr. P lifts them all day so makes it look very easy...:blast

If you drop it on it`s right hand side, make sure you put the side stand out before you lift otherwise it may go straight over...:augie

And make sure its not on the loose stuff! I picked a GSA with no probs on the Offroad Course ...well the mirror did catch in my pocket half way up which was a bugga..... but when I dropped my GS in deep gravel all it did was just slide and the wheels never got a purchase.

There is another way, but basically which method you use depends on which way your handlebars are facing when you drop it. Where the front wheel if pointing into the ground (not pointing to the sky as in those Off-Road course videos).
  1. Squat with your back towards the bike.
  2. One hand grabs the handlebar nearest the ground
  3. The other hand grabs something sturdy towards the back of the bike and
  4. You push upwards and backwards with your legs and the tyres will grip. :thumb2
Just a friendly word of warning though. The man that taught me how to do this reckons that a high percentage of people over-do it and push the bike over too far the other way. :blast Never a good move in a busy pub car park. :D

ask a woman.... they know everything.... apparently. :hide

Don't lift facing the bike!

Ogmios is definitely the right track with this one. Lift with your back to the bike unless you're looking to earn Frequent Visit points at your Osteopath or Chiropractor. It's a massive strain on your lower back to lift a bike when facing it. Pavey may be a riding god but his bike-lifting method is plain wrong.

Peak Rider,
thank you.
i've often been asked by my Lady Trainees :D and point them toward that method.
the first time i saw it demonstrated was a small woman and a huge BMW tourer (K12? something or other - barn door fairing + panniers / topbox).

couldn't find that specific vid / but the one i did find = same method.:thumb

if a petite Lady can do.... surely the average Tosser can do too :D

Just my experience, but I try and pick it up as quickly as possible before the cameras start flashing:D

This is the way to do it - you are then in total control of the whole process.

If you do it with your back pointing towards the bike - yes it may lift easier - but you then have to turn yourself round in order to get control.

The first thing to remember when in a panic is to shut the engine off so the back wheel is not still running - 'cos it aint funny when you pick the bike up and it immediately goes down the road.

Other than some excellent tips on how to actually lift it, don't forget the following process to keep your coolness  halo:

* Come to your senses asap ! :dabone

* Quickly look around if anyone saw you drop it. :ymca

If yes, wave violently with your fist at the closest driver or trespasser, as if it were his/her fault. :forry
If not, resume with the earlier described ways to pick it up asap, before you are spotted. :weights

* If you drop it in front of a busy cafe and people start laughing at you, make sure to take your helmet off immediately and start collecting donations for the entertainment provided and the repairs needed. :beerjug:
:D

Lie down next to bike. If you have a bottle of tomato sauce etc, anoint freely. Someone will stop soon & help you. Two get it up so much easier than one (Oops)
