How do you plan your long routes, as individual days or one long route?

All of the above! :thumb
I don't put the whole route on the GPS (tried it once, never again!) but do have some places or points of interest as waypoints, then see how the trip goes. What looks good on the (paper) map is always a good indication!
GPS is just another tool to help you, but it can hinder you as well.

Not done this but reading through your responses it occurred to me that the following might be one way to use the satnav.

1. Plan your destination for the day - just the town or if you really want to, the hotel/B&B/camp site.

2. Ignore the satnav and just ride - in the general direction (clearly needs some small idea of which way you should be going).:thumb2

3. When its getting late or you are getting desperate - that panicky moment we sometimes get - don't we? Turn on the satnav to get a bearing (and even use it to navigate the rest of the way).

Benefit of both worlds. Free riding and technology when needed.:JB

An alternative to this is to leave the sat nav on with just the final destination set. Turn off the sat nav audio. Ride wherever you want but in the afternoon Keep an eye on the ETA time and when it gets to the time you'd want to be propping up the bar with first cool 'end of ride' beer, turn the audio back on and follow directions.

I never use a full route, I put in enough waypoints to keep to my desired path, but can easily edit them out on the fly if need be.

With mapsource if you do the dot-dot planning your buggered if you want / need to alter the route slightly.

I use Tyre to plan a route with enough waypoints to keep on my desired route and then either upload it direct to sat-nav, or load it into mapsource to add Hotels and Fuel Stations if need be.

On Sunday wife and I are flying to Buenos Aires (hopefully the bike will arrive two days later).

Plan is to go from the bottom to the top and take 6-9 months over it.

Have a GPS with the CN South America and CN North America maps.

That is all the plan consists of. I'm happy with that.:)

Maybe my mistake will be to have taken a KTM instead of my 1200 GSA. :(

Bastward, :( my dream ride. Enjoy.

On my last trip to scandinavia I had 2 planned days. The first 2. This was to get me to sweden as fast as possible.

After that it was on the fly. Ride as far as I wanted on any given day.

Unfortunately I chose the wettest 3 weeks to ride in. After 7 days of rain and also camping I could not get my boots dry. I decided that I was not wanted in the area this year so turned round and made my way home.

12 days on the road and 11 days of rain. Last 5 nights were spent in hotels all booked by just turning up at the door. I was in Oslo the day before the bombing and walked through the area where it went off.:eek

It took my boots 3 days to dry out after my return
