How do you unlock a mobile phone?

My daughter has an oldish phone which used to work on vodafone but she now has an o2 simcard but vodafone want to charge her £20 to unlock it - is there an easier and cheaper way?

take the phone down to the the "less upmarket" shopping areas...markets and the surrounds etc.. there will be a shop selling phone accessories and new faces for the phones etc. It will cost between 10-20 quid depending on how new the phone is etc.

if its a nokia, it costs about £2. just search on ebay. done about 5.. no problems with any.
