I changed my battery a couple of weeks back and hence there was no lecky to my bikes puter whilst the battery was disconnected. The service indicator has come on now cos it's a year since the last one but because I didn't do many miles last year (1500 or so, it was one of those ....) how does the puter know when the service is due when I choked off its blood supply ?

White man's magic...
Or the bikes ECU has a back-up battery, or flash memory to retain stored data, fault codes, service dates and mileages etc.

I thought the service indicator came on by default, after the electrical supply has been interrupted. Definitely seems to be the case with my F800GS, so I'd suspect the same with others.
