How far over 12k for valve check is acceptable?

My local BMW dealer quoted me £295 for 12k service inc brake fluid. Hope that included the Vat :blast
Booked in for 2 weeks time

Dealer prices (ish)

4l Oil = £65
Oil filter = £20
Plugs = £40
Air filter = £40
RWD Oil (180ml) = £25
Sundries = £5

Total = £200 (ish)

Labour is £100ph. So they're charging you for one hour of labour.

And to be honest, I used to do this service in one hour too.

But I guarantee the tech gives ZERO f**ks. about your bike. It's in and out fast. The tech is turning spanners as fast as he can to hit bonus.

And they may add the VAT too ;)

Does anyone know if they lube the splines on the drive shaft and if yes, at what service intervals?

For peace of mind I would get the valve check service done, then you are covered. As a general rule the water cooled boxer engine is bulletproof, there was a batch of bad cams a while back that affected a small minority of bikes, so ask the mechanic to check for wear on the cam nodes.

As for the valve clearance needing adjustment on 99% of w c boxers they won’t need to be, as they very very rarely go out of spec.

Welcome to the forum, and enjoy your bike.

Any idea what year affected?
The more i think about it I might do the 1st 12k mile service myself. I was thinking the stamp might be useful if I part X but a receipt with the parts should suffice.

Is there any information relating to Vin or production dates that the bad cams refer to?

It seems to to have affected mainley the inlet valves on the 16/17 year boxer engine bikes. Mine is a 15 Gs, and as I do all my own servicing, I've checked them twice and found no problems. the bikes done 27,000 ish miles.

I'd want to check the 1250. I have absolutely ZERO faith in those shift cams.

Since you profile you self as a BMW tech.

On what information basis do you base your lack of faith in the shift cams, and which part of the system do you consider to be the problem?

Lubricating the splines isn't part of any service whatsoever. It should be though.

It's something you have to ask for.

If you take your cam cover off and look at how it works then you may share a similar level of pessimism. It's all governed by a single motor and a fragile mechanism. If anything BMW are notorious for is making over-complicated and questionably reliable electronic systems. When that motor finally decides to give up (And it is probably designed to give up after 3-4 years), it will probably take your top end with it.

I'm sure you'll have no problems with your bike if you're like 99% of BMW riders who swap their bike every two years so never have a bike out of warranty or without BMW roadside assistance.

However, I can't imagine many 1250's will be still rolling with their original cams and cam motors motors in ten years time. And that's exactly how the industry works now. Planned obsolescence.

But lets hope I'm wrong. It's still too early to know.

Mmm,it's a simple motor is very true, if it fails it probably just won't work and shift cam will fail to operate and you will see warning lamp and probably limp mode. I Don't get all the doom and gloom i haven't seen one post on hear yet regarding a shift cam motor failure.
I will agree mind regarding bmws overcomplicated systems but my experience comes from cars, cam chains spring to mind. There's lots of stuff thrashing around these engines and now they produce more power and rev higher, i use this performance and higher rev ceiling regularly so i change engine oil and filter and fd oil plus lube splines every 3000 miles. Have i ever had a fd problem in any gs no,all my lc bikes have had quiet engines. Perhaps just luck but i will carry on serving it in between dealer services (yes i want the book stamped)
