Keep in mind that the US did not allow access to military GPS satellites until 1983 (following the shooting down of Korean Air Lines Flight 007) and high-accuracy civilian access was not available until 2000 when Selective Availability (SA) was discontinued by President Bill Clinton.

I quite happily navigated using maps until late 2004 and could go back.......but GPS is so much more convenient. Thought that some of the GPS nerds on here might find the video interesting.

GPS was Ronald Reagan's gift to the world, in fact. As Mzokk says, at first it was not high accuracy but a "differential" licence could be purchased to switch <5m accuracy on. I well remember using it on surveys up in the North Sea, when it was replacing the Loran C system.

Along with dismantling the USSR, I guess. That he was in love with Mrs T was helpful, too….. as was the fact, she knew how to smooch him.

Modern GPS is fantastic. Alongside Google, it has transformed our ability to go from A to B or A to Z and back, safely and accurately. Linking it to AI, will be the next huge jump, with 3D virtual maps, which will make Google Earth look like:

PS When you look at it, that’s actually not a bad map at all. Though you’d struggle to pin point Dextrus Secundus’ Chariot Friendly Digs, with pinpoint accuracy.
