How far

Don't know haven't tried it, but my C15 used to lose all it's gearbox oil over about 30 miles and I'd ride it for probably 2-300 before I filled it up - i was young and foolish but nothing went wrong. I did eventually manage to repair the leak mostly because oil all over the drive used to piss my dad off.

I'm no mechanic, but not far, probably a few miles before it overheated and seized up.
Broke a mini metro that way back in the '90's

Just wondering. I lent my bike to a mate, maybe ex-mate, for a trip to southern Spain and told him to change the oil when he got there.
Showed him hex key sump plug and the allen key in the tool tray.

Off he goes and a couple of weeks later I get a phone call. "I have a noise". All the usual questions follow.
Turns out they were trying to charge him €90 for an oil change so he did it himself.
He explained that he used the 19mm spanner:tears to undo the drain plug but didn't think that much oil came out (!?)
Never mind, he filled the engine. Buggered if I know how much he managed to put in there.
He said he had ridden about 100 kms before he heard noises, stopped and called me.

I called him all the twats I could think of and told him to go into the garage he was parked by, after Siesta, and get it looked at or I would arrange my breakdown insurance to kick in.

They refilled the gearbox and drained out engine oil and all was quiet... apparently.

Now, Do I stick him for the cost of a gearbox overhaul or an exchange unit:nenau
I suppose it better be the latter as a bit more than the bearings could be fecked.

Moral? Don't lend your bike, (or your wife), to your mates!

I'd be looking at the magnetic drain plug once its done a few miles with oil in it.

Bearings are easy enough to change but chewed gear teeth, shock absorber cams and splines on shafts are a different matter :blast.

If it makes its way back to your house it will be something of a result :augie.

Bob.

Its like watching a crippled Moon-Shot make its way back to Earth :D.

Bob.

Two fuel systems missing, re entry shields shot, half the electronics have failed but she's still flying...

mine covered 1200 miles with a collapsed main output shaft bearing, the only thing that stopped the shaft from moving any further was second gear hitting the gearbox case.

Now, how would you know THAT?!
You know the old six degrees of separation theory. Well in this case it's two degrees. I've ridden with him here in NZ, & he sent me a facebook PM with a photo of your bike. He didn't tell me who he'd got it from but there can't be too many GSPD Classics with WP50 extremes set up like your bike.

He said he ran it for 100kms before he heard the whining/screaming noise.

I went for a proper ride on it today... no noise, no rumbles, gear shift like it always was. Clutch-less shifting also AOK.
I will dump the oil and see what that contains, but other wise, it all seems good.
