How high do you regularly rev the 12?

Now that I've had the 600 mile service and have been told I can do what I want with the revs, I've had several forays into the higher echelons of the rev range, but found that whilst it's nice and quick, the experience isn't all that pleasing to my senses.

Up to 4k rpm the engine is very smooth and strong, this probably true up to 5.5k rpm, but beyond that things get very thrashy and positively brutal.

Since the engine has such a lot of grunt, my riding through London won't require much more than 4k rpm, but I don't think I'd be inclined to go beyond that unless I really needed to (overtaking for example).

Am I being a wuss, or do others find the same largely?

The engine can comfortably take the abuse, but just like sticking your fingers in electrical sockets - if you don't like the feeling, then don't do it! :)

well - i guess if its anything like the 1150 it'll be no where near loosened up after only 600 miles. I'd be tempted to thrash it everywhere for a while - that'll help bed it in...

Mine has 1200miles on the clock and the first service was at 1000miles. To start with anything over 5000RPM felt terrible but it's getting better and now I regularly see 6500RPM. It needs 3000RPM to get any grunt and stopping at 4000RPM is just too narrow a rev range to be practical when getting a move on. It's now a bit smoother at the higher revs. To start with I was not impressed by the performance but now I'm giving it a bit of stick it's much better. It seems to respond well to a bit of harsh treatment so don't be afraid to rev it, it's probably less of a strain on the engine than making it labour at low revs.
But, like the man said, if you don't like it don't do it!

I'm with Emoto. I regularly rev to 7+ when joing the motorway/dual carriageways.
Mine has 3800mls on the clock. I bought it 2nd hand at 3000mls.

It has lossened up significantly in 800mls of harder use. I generally cruise at 85/90mph so 5k rpm. I can even see what make of car is behind me:D Something I could never do on my 1150. Still loved the 1150 but the 12 is alot smoother and soooo chuckable:D :D :D

I wish there was an GSA with 30ltr tank with a 1200 engine at 200kg....nirvana.

Ooohh! I had a quiver come over me then just like Bill Murray when in the dentist's chair of Steve Martin in Little Shop of Horrors (yeah, okay I'm weird! :D )

See personally, I like it when an engine buzzes as you wind up the power. God I'm looking forward to getting my GS12...

Nuts to it then - I'll just rag the hell out of it!

Problem is, when I do that up Park Lane I'll either be zapped by the camera or straight up someone's tailpipe!

Ah well, I'll have to find more excuses to get out into the countryside.

Mines done 1750 miles so far ,kept to4000 for first 1000 miles, pushed up to5to6ooo did seem a little harsh but gets better all the time .Just taken in for first service ,only used 300 m/litres off oil on hols:beerjug:

Gets better and better

Mine has now covered 3600 miles since got it on 8th May. Took it quickly to 4000 max for first 100 miles then rode it as would normally. Engine has only used 200 mil of oil in 3600 miles, and gets better and better. Escorted a 2004 R1 amongst other Yams at a local dealers open day lots of interest in GS, whilst out with guy on R1, GS held its own, although no really long straights, guy on R1 very suprised.

Regulary rev it to 7K plus just for the hell of it, reminds me of a two cylinder version of a fireblade. although loved my last 1150, inspite of what the purists think, personally the 1200 is a much better bike all round.

I love the way this bike revs! It's such a joy to run it to the limiter that I do it often. I've got 1400 miles so far and I the bike is starting to feel so much smoother. All the parts are starting to work together in a beautiful way. The whole thing is very stable now that the shocks have some miles on them. And I can't believe the power. Front wheel comes right up in first. I've just fitted a Staintune can and that seems to add quite a bit to the experience, even though it's not very loud.

I rev it for short periods of time to the maximum almost every time I ride it. My bike has 3300km on the clock now and it's really getting better with less vibration in lower revs. I can easily use 6th gear on unpaved roads at 3000rpm and just use all the torque to drive it away. When bike was new, using it below 4000rpm on higher gears was really a pain to my hands beacuse it caused so much vibration.
