Anyone seen over 100.5 °C in this recent hot weather?

Whatever the ambient temp mine seems to max out at 100.5°C with the fan running and then quickly drop down to 90-95 when crawling along in traffic.

No problem there then, well below the boiling point of the coolant.

I've had me mug and "Yorkshire Gold" tea bag ready since 2nd April and still waiting for the bloody thing to boil:nenau

What do they say a watched kettle never boils - How True.

85-94 for me, with Touratat radiator guards :augie

same for me on temp range using my bling bling babies

IMHO I don`t think any rad guards short of an unpunctured cardboard box will significantly affect the temp control.

Awesomely :topic I know so I apologise but no I haven`t noticed any adverse problems regarding the high ambient temp.

It's not a problem, runs a lot cooler than some water cooled bikes in traffic - low to mid 80s when moving, never gets above 90 unless in stop go traffic in 30C heat.

P.S. dont have radiator guards :D

Do they run thermostats? I thought that the idea of water cooling was to keep the temperature of the critical engine parts as constant as possible but you say they vary between around 80ºC and Emoto's 100ºC:nenau

Any idea of what temperature the pressurised water/ethylene glycol(?) mix boils at?
 
Not sure if it runs a thermostat.
But 80 - 100 is a perfect range.
Any less that 80 ish, and the friction modifiers in the oil won't be working properly.
And 100 is well within the upper working range of both the oil and the coolant.
Oil upper range is something like 140c for the oil (I'd need to check the specific oil data sheet)
And 120 ish for the coolant.
I'd say about right.

You could design the cooling system to keep a tighter tolerance - say 80 to 85,
But the cooling system would be significantly larger / heavier.

Note that in your car, the coolant will have the same sort of working temp range, but the temperature gauges are de-sensitised, so the needle stays in the same place.

The downside of this is that you only know you are overheating when you are REALLY overheating - you don't get the needle creeping up as the temp gets closer and closer to critical.

Depends (initially) on the ratio between ethylene glycol and water.

  • A straight 50-50 ratio (half ethylene glycol to half water) raises the boiling point to 107c; pure water boiling at 100c at normal air pressure, of course.
  • A 70-30 ratio (30% water) raises the boiling point to 116c
  • A 100% ratio (no water at all) raises the boiling point to 197c

As you can see it's a monotonical increase... :augie

Now the pressure bit....

A 50/50 mixture of water and ethylene glycol antifreeze in the cooling system will boil at 107 degrees C if the cap is open (see above).

But as long as the system is sealed and holds pressure, a radiator cap rated at 15 psi will increase the boiling temperature of a 50/50 coolant blend up to 129 degrees C.
