How @**@ing stupid can I be - Diesel

Years ago I stuck 70 litres of petrol in a Disco TD5 which managed to run for 8 miles before stopping in a cloud of smoke. LR dealer quoted £2k plus to put it right. The RAC guy came and advised to get it recovered to a friendly garage where they drained it and charged me £60 to "dispose" of the petrol, another £60 to fill it up and £200 recovery costs. Ran like a dream after for the next 70k before I sold it.

I think I must just be bloody lucky, as I put unleaded in my diesel Seat Leon about a year and a half ago. I only put a tenners worth in, as the fuel light was on, and it started and ran all the way back to work. However next day it didnt start at all, and would just turn over until i got bored and shut the ignition off. It was cured by a very kind gent at work (he even drove to my house to help me!!) with nothing more complicated than a fucking huge fuel can and topping up the tank to weaken off the petrol that was left in there.


Oddly enough it seemed to run a bit better for a short while, but i may well be imagining this, as I was soooo pleased to not have to imagine a scenario where I had to walk 8 miles to work at 4 in the morning.......

Stupidity realised this morning and booked into BMW tomorrow.
Aside from cost of cleaning it out - any longer term damage likely to be caused?

It may be quicker to ask who hasn’t done it, that won’t include me either! But I realised what I was doing before I started the engine, so got away lightly.
 
Old truck drivers trick, to stop diesel waxing was that, 1 gallon of petrol into diesel tank, no ice in line after that. :D Not sure the newer trucks would like that trick now!

Or worse a fire under the fuel tank to defrost the ice inside. Those where the days! :rob
 
No additive to diesel back then, with ice floating on top of diesel in winter, and fuel lines frozen solid, only way to get going, back then. Cannot recall ever a truck burning from that solution.
Slices of nice Toast while you waited for lines to defrost. :D

Joking aside, I’ve never really considered diesel and its properties. It’s greasy old stuff isn’t it 😞 found it on my tank - pump dribble
 
Step one.

Get it out of the main dealer ASAP.

They will rob you blind for a minor issue. They will probably try and sell you a new engine..

They don't fix things. They sell things for their fitters to replace.

As it's still running, you are lucky. You need a regular garage to drain the tank and possibly the fuel rail. Not a big drama. You can turn on the fuel pump with diagnostics and run fresh fuel through.

Fresh fuel then go for a long ride.
