How large a data plan does the Nav need if my riding is 3-4x per month and in the UK?

======

I have started you a fresh thread.

I'm on 5gb per month
Used for 7 days in Europe last week and used a quarter of a gig including a few rides earlier in the month at home
Was the moneysavingexpert offer
1.95 pm fir 1st 6 month's then 4.90 thereafter

Just get 100g for less than a tenner and use it whilst sitting at home streaming and watching YT and doing the same when touring. Don't skimp as data is cheap.

I’ve used less than 500 mb whilst touring in Europe for the last 12 days. Lebara sim has been perfect.

Lebara 3G ordered £1.70 p/m here

Thanks for the advice (y)

I've been using Lebara for several years. If you find the 3GB is not enough, as it is a rolling 30 day contract it is easy to flip it up to 5GB for the following month.

I have never used all of the 5GB in any month, including those where I am away for 2 weeks uploading pictures to Facebook, using google maps etc.

Mine was the lowest data offering and cheapest Lebara available at £1.27 monthly.
Haven’t exceeded the limits over the four months since I signed -up.
Just make sure you don’t update your maps, unless you’re linked to Wi-Fi.

The CRN occasionally asks if you wish to update a worldwide mapset ( 🤣 ) when you’re riding down a UK country lane; just cancel the screen message and update when you eventually connect to Wi-Fi. 👍

I’ve a very similar Lebara deal to this. I am a relatively heavy data user, so 10GB wouldn’t have been enough.

In order to get a £15 gift card, you need to wait 180 days to make a claim, then additional 30 days. Be sure to keep any email you receive from Lebara. As it took some effort for me to get my £30 Amazon gift card.

I find Lebara quite good. Not perfect by any means, but allot better than O2 or Three contracts I have had in the past.

I been with ID mobile for about 4 years. £10 pcm, 100GB data, unlimited calls and text. No roaming charge and has always had a signal wherever I have been in Europe.

I'm sure I'm being a bit of a muppet but, having downloaded the app and logged into it, to activate the SIM it appears I need to put it into a phone to receive a text code. Is that the case or do I simply put the Lebara SIM into the nav unit?

Cheers

Put it straight into the nav unit.
It’s for data only.
You don’t need to mess around with slotting it into your phone or receive text codes.

I'm a Lebara convert too. I run it as a dual SIM as it's for Parish Council work talking to contractors, residents etc where I don't want them to have my private number.

Can you use your phone WiFi as a hotspot to run your sat nav? It seems a waste to loose those "free" minutes and text and data every month.

This 👍🏽

I use a giff gaff sim £7 a month i think,

Calls / text free and i get i think 10gb data, i run to south of france once a year and back and i use sodd all

dedicated Nav's only use data for live upodates & traffic routing the rest is already downloaded

Even 18/7 spotify only uses about 2gb of data a month

For £6.90 with Lebara, I get 35gb of data, free call and texts within UK (never ever use the text allowance as everyone is on WhatsApp or iMessage, which does use data) plus 100 minutes of international calls. 30GB roaming data, the most of any other provider.
The other benefit of Lebara is that it is a 30 day rolling contract. Unlike traditional (12/18/24 month) contracts, there is no hard (or indeed soft) credit check, so it doesn’t bugger up your credit score.

My rolling contract has just renewed at midnight.

Same as,

Physical SIM card for work, and eSIM for my private number. Both are with Lebara, having switched from £15 per month O2 contracts with same 35GB, unlimited everything else allowance. The difference is, that my work contract now cost £7.90 per month and private £6.90 per month. Less than £15 overall by comparison, and the signal I get much better too.

It has been many many years since I’ve taken out a 24 month phone and line contract at £45-60pcm. I buy my phones outright (factory unlocked) and use sim only contracts. This does allow me to upgrade anytime I want to a new handset, or indeed to switch my service provider.
Plus I get to sell the phone without it being tied up exclusively to any service providers network.

I regularly use my data allowance out in the field, when I need to fire up my laptop or iPad and there’s no wifi, by using my phones hotspot.

I've been using my iPhone/Waze on an SP Connect powered/dampened mount for years linked to the nav but the vibrations are taking it's toll on the iphone. That's why I've gone for the SIM enabled nav unity.

IIUC - the OP was asking the question regarding data usage in relation to a Connected Ride Navigator.
The CR Navigator doesn’t have a call function, and only uses data.

Perhaps the Mod should have moved this straight to the Conn Ride section, to avoid confusion? 👍

The topic can address both at once, not least as it comes up in relation to phones and navigation devices, such as the Connected ride.

The truth is, pure navigation alone uses very little data. If anyone really worries, most providers will gladly put a monetary cap on spending.
