How large a data plan do I need?

While it can address both questions at once, to keep it simple for sailors you don’t need to register, or insert the SIM card into a phone, or download an app to let you know how many minutes or how much data you’ve used every month - which was where the question arose.

Any nav uses minimalist data, so long as you avoid updating full mapsets on the move

As per the advice, simply put the SIM in the NAV unit and it immediately read the SIM. All sorted, thanks for the advice.

I've been using my iPhone/Waze on an SP Connect powered/dampened mount for years linked to the nav but the vibrations are taking it's toll on the iphone. That's why I've gone for the SIM enabled nav unity.

many phones will soon run down the battery in hotspot mode so best to have it powered

fair point but years of sustained vibrations have made my iPhone less than reliable
